Music Improves Mood: When That Music Starts To Play, Bad Moods Go and Good Moods Stay No matter what kind of music you listen to, it makes your mood better. At least it works for college students, report Valerie N. Stratton and Annette H. Zalanowski, of Penn State University, The researchers studied their students' moods in response to music. Students kept two-week musiclistening diaries. They also reported their moods before and after each musical episode. The results appear in a recent issue of Psychology and Education: An Interdisciplinary Journal. "Not only did our sample of students report more positive emotions after listening to music, but their already positive emotions were intensified by listening to music," Stratton says. It didn't matter whether the students listened to rock/pop, soft rock/easy listening, oldies, classical, or new-age music. It also didn't seem to matter whether the music was played during an activity - such as dressing or driving - or whether it was played while socializing. After listening, students were more optimistic, joyful, friendly, relaxed, and calm. They were also less pessimistic and sad. Music can calm and revitalize us and has the power to elevate our moods when feeling worried or depressed. Everyone has his or her own favourite songs and we usually use them to put us in a romantic, peaceful or cheerful mood. According to a study of more than 36,000 people from around the world, musical tastes and personality are closely related. The research, which was carried out by Professor Adrian North, of Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, suggested that the general public has held some stereotypes of some musical styles fans. Some examples in his study describe that it is surprising the similarities between fans of classical music and heavy metal. They are both creative but not outgoing. Classical music fans are shy while heavy metal ones are gentle and delicate. 1 According to the first line of the text... a Music makes people feel better. b Its important that people listen to music. c You always need music to have a good mood. d Good music makes you feel in a good mood.
