Assignment

There are two main types of air compressors: positive displacement and dynamic. Positive displacement compressors work by reducing the volume of air in a chamber to increase pressure, and include reciprocating and rotary screw compressors. Dynamic compressors use rotating impellers to accelerate air and increase pressure, with centrifugal compressors being most common. Centrifugal compressors operate in three stages - intake with filtering, compression with enter cooling, and final compression with after cooling - to reach high pressures of 728 bar at low temperatures. Selection of compressors considers factors like air flow rate, pressure requirements, efficiency, and capacity.

AIR COMPRESSOR:
Air compressor is a mechanical device that converts power (usually from an electric motor) into kinetic energy by compressing and pressurizing air. Some of the compressors operate through motor and some of them operate without motor. Compressors that operate through motor, they basically converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.

Type of air compressor:

There are basically two types of air compressor: 1) 2) Positive displacement air compressor Dynamic air compressor

1) POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT AIR COMPRESSORS:

Positive-displacement air compressors work by forcing air into a chamber whose volume is reduced to compress the air. There are further two types of positive displacement compressors.

a) RECIPROCATING AIR COMPRESSOR:

Reciprocating compressors are also called Piston Type Air Compressor. Piston-type air compressors use this principle by pumping air into an air chamber through the use of the constant motion of pistons. They use unidirectional valves to guide air into a chamber, where the air is compressed.

b) ROTARY SCREW AIR COMPRESSOR:

Rotary screw compressors also use positive-displacement compression by matching two helical screws that, when turned, guide air into a chamber, the volume of which is reduced as the screws turn.

2) DYNAMIC AIR COMPRESSORS:

Dynamic compressors transfer the energy from a rotating impeller to the air. Thesecompressors use velocity to cause an inrease in air pressure. There are further types of dynamic compressors but mostly the centrifugal compressors are used.

a) CENTRIFUGAL AIR COMPRESSOR:

Centrifugal compressors are basically three stage compressors.

FIRST STAGE:

Firstly atmospheric air enters through 2 micron plates are used as filters which remove the dust particles that come in with air. Then the air enters through the suction guide veins. Here the high velocity impellers accelerate air to the second stage. Here pressure is maintained.

SECOND STAGE:
In this stage, here are the enter coolers to cool down the air. Most of the air compressed here. Here 5bar pressure is maintained at 120 degree temperature approx.

THIRD STAGE:
In this stage, the after coolers are there which cool down the air. Here 728bar pressure is maintained at 40 degree temperature.
