In addition to a number of Japanese language courses, the program regularly offers classes in history of Japanese thoughts, Japanese literature, etc. Among the foci of the program is to train program students in academic skills in class presentation and report writing.

Universitys Overview Tohoku University was founded in 1907 as the third Imperial University in Japan. Tohoku University consists of 10 faculties for undergraduate, 16 graduate schools, 3 professional graduate schools and 6 research institutes. The eastern part of the prefecture faces the Pacific Ocean and the western part is a mountainous region. Between them lies the Sendai Plain. Fishery and agriculture are the chief industries in the prefecture. Sendai city in which Tohoku University is located has a population of about 1,000,000. The city, once prospered as a castle town, plays an important role as the economic and cultural center of Tohoku district at present. Sendai has been called City of Green and widely known as one of the most beautiful and environmentally pleasant cities in Japan. It is about 1 hour and 40 minutes by Shinkansen (super express) from Tokyo.

Feature of the course Japanese language & Japanese culture studies program at Tohoku University Characteristics of the Program This program is aimed at students who have strong motivation and interest in independent research activities. The students can take classes of their choice from a large variety of Japanese language and culture courses offered at Tohoku University. In addition to a number of Japanese language courses, the program regularly offers classes in history of Japanese thoughts, Japanese literature, etc. Among the foci of the program is to train program students in academic skills in class presentation and report writing.

Level Intermediate Qualification and Requirements for Applicants Applicants must satisfy the following conditions. 1) Applicants are expected to have passed level 2 (or higher) of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test provided by Japan Foundation or have equal or higher proficiency. 2) Applicants must be studying Japanese language or Japanese culture as their academic major at their home country university. Goals and Objectives Improvement of Japanese ability, and understanding of Japan and Japanese culture. Period of the Program October 1, 2014 September 30, 2015 Classes All courses meet 1.5 hours per week. 2) Workshops on Japanese Culture The program also offers Workshops on Japanese Culture (Flower arrangement, Japanese sweets cooking, Tea ceremony, Japanese drums, etc.) 3) Other lectures, elective, etc. Besides these classes for international students, the program students may, with the permission of the instructor, take or audit undergraduate classes in other departments (e.g. Faculty of Arts and Letters).
