The Process of Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is a process which light energy (sun) combined with carbon dioxide and water
react chemically process together and change into sugar (glucose) as food of the plant and release
oxygen. The picture shows the Photosynthesis steps, this process is very important for life on earth
because with the Photosynthesis process provides oxygen that all other life depend on it.
Photosynthesis is divided in two parts there are Light dependent reaction (light reactions) and Light
independent reaction (dark reactions). In the Light reactions need light to produce organic energy
molecules and pushed into ATP. The other part is Dark reactions, this process will happen when the ATP
is used to make glucose. This reaction cycle is also called the Calvin Cycle.
The first steps of Photosynthesis, plants will get carbon dioxide from the air through their leaves.
The carbon dioxide entry through small holes in the underside of the leaf that called stomata. And then,
plants get the water they needed for Photosynthesis process through their roots. Plants need water for
the important things such as provide dissolved minerals that keep the plants healthy, allow other
chemical reactions to occur in plant cells, keep the plant cool and hydrated. Plants got the light energy
from the sun through the upper side of the leaf. Plants can capture the light energy because of leaf
structures called chloroplasts. In the Chloroplasts there is a magic compound called Chlorophyll. This is
the main part of Chloroplasts that can grab sunlight and start the whole process. Chlorophyll absorbs
the light energy they needed to make Photosynthesis process happen. It is important to note that not all
the colour wave lengths of light are absorbed. Plants mostly absorb red and blue wave lengths, they do
not absorb light from the green range.
After Carbon dioxide and water are combined with light energy, the chemical reactions will
begin then resulting Sugar (glucose) and Oxygen. Glucose used by plants as their foods. The plant cells
also convert some of the glucose into starch for storage. This will be used when the plant needs them.
This is why dead plants are used as biomass, because they have stored chemical energy in them. And
Oxygen released into the atmosphere for living things to breathe. So this why Photosynthesis is one of
the most important chemical reactions in the world.
