Server Infrastructure Lab 11

This document contains the questions and answers from a lab on maintaining Windows Server 2008 file services. It discusses configuring and using shadow copies, restoring files, sharing folders, default disk quota templates, and enforcing quotas. Disk quotas can be configured without the File Server Resource Manager installed but are more limited. File screens are enforced actively or passively, and hard quotas prevent exceeding disk limits while soft quotas allow it.

LAB REVIEW QUESTIONS

Completion time 15 minutes

1. In your own words, describe what you learned by completing this lab.

In this lab, I learned how to install and configure shadow copies. I found it
interesting that this was done by way of a share. I practiced my status bar
watching skills during the windows backup section of the lab. (kidding)
Creating a new simple volume for the backup was reinforncement of what I’ve
previously learned, the rest of 11.3 was basically as well. Finally, I learned how
to install and configure disk quotas from the server angle.

2. Can disk quotas be configured if the File Server Resource Manager is not
installed?

Yes, quotas are also available on NTFS volumes without installing the FSRM
service, but are more limited.

3. How are file screens enforced?

File screens are enforced with either active or passive enforcement.

4. What is the difference between a hard quota and a soft quota?

Users may continue to save or modify files past the soft quota limit, while a hard
quota will prevent users from creating or modifying files if the disk quota is
exceeded.
