The Shining Gears
Editorial by Charles Brian Castor
With 18 consecutive years championing State Colleges and Universities and
Athletic Association (SCUAA) III, I often ask myself Whats the next for the Bulacan
State University Gold Gears?, and then we will notice the not-so-dominant Bulacan
pride on the gold medal tally in the National Games.
In my opinion, the Gears should have been circling the medal tallies at National-
Level Games, where they will play against the best teams in every region.
Sure, we are known throughout the Philippines on sports, with previous
accomplishments and podium finishes each year, but thats way short compared to the
biggest rivals out there.
First, the facilities given to the College of Physical Education, Recreation and
Sports (CoPERS), as far as we know, the only college who have no building. Although
they are hailed kings of the last Intramurals, the mentor of the Gears falls behind.
Ordinary students shares the training ground, thus the college suffers, and ultimately,
the Gold Gears.
Second, the Gears should be well-equipped. Get an issue of Pacesetter, and see
how they lack advanced equipment as they face well-known teams. Issues of
Equipment v. Performance will sure be raised here, but what can you do without good
baseball bats, good bow and arrows, and pep squad grounds against the latest
technology in the hands of foes.
Third, the student support. Sure, hundreds of BulSUans rubbing shoulders when
the kings of Central Luzon is hosting a tournament in the BulSU Activity Center, with
cheers and applauses whenever they score, what who is with them during their
preparations, during the hard times, did anyone observes them during this times? Or at
least know their names? Ask, and you will see. [Insert sports quote here]
As the administration aims for a better university, they should have answering
about the calls of the CoPERS, though the colleges populace is not yet big, a small
building will not harm, instead of transforming the historical Chess Institute, the first in
the country, to an accreditation room and the deans office. The fund of the school is
already big enough for canceling our development fee, how about addressing the
college which never fails to put our name on the best schools list?, instead of opening
some new courses, which will add another thousand or so on our 39 thousand other
schoolmates.
Being a public school, the BulSU knows auditing and bidding. So how about if the
president signs every Gold Gears request for a nice shoe, a replacement ball, or a
safety knee cap or sleeves? Or at least a locker room to be used exclusively of
athletes? If not immediately for a Gold Gear Gym, which they are sure planning about,
granting them everything is a big help, remembering that the De Jesus administration is
effective at bringing income generating projects (IGPs).
If the Bulacan State University Gold Gears have the ability to place top notch on
National Competitions? They have it long ago, championship is inevitable.
