SCVCS Student Spotlight
Introducing Hope Harvard, 2014 Miss South Carolina Teen!
Hope entered her first pageant and received her first crown at age
five under the Palmetto Princess Program. Hope says, The Palmetto
Princess Program is a mentorship program for young girls in which con-
testants in the Miss South Carolina Pageant teach their Palmetto Prin-
cess about service and character. It is eleven years later and Im still
serving the Miss South Carolina Organization as Miss South Carolina
Teen!
Hopes platform Giving H.O.P.E. Helping Others with Positive Encour-
agement aims to encourage others to volunteer and provide a posi-
tive message in their respective communities. Hope says, Through my
platform, I planned the Day of H.O.P.E. in my hometown of Easley,
S.C. I collaborated with the Easley Town Council and Mayor Larry Bag-
well, as well as the Dream Center and local high schools to plan sev-
en community service projects in one day to offer the citizens of Ea-
sley an opportunity to volunteer. As the 2014 Miss South Carolina
Teen Hope not only encourages individuals across the state to value
service and community projects but she is also a positive role model
for other young teens. She says, I have found that the best way to
reach out to other teens is to simply speak with them about the bene-
fits of the organization. Visiting schools and social media are great
ways to connect with teens! Students may follow my journey as Miss
SC Teen on Instagram, @missscteen2014.
As the reigning Miss South Carolina Teen, Hope has learned a lot and enjoys the honor of representing our
state for not only SC teens, but teens everywhere. She says, The most wonderful part of becoming Miss
South Carolina Teen doesnt have to do with the glitz and the glam of being a beauty queen. Its the op-
portunities that I have been provided with to make a difference in South Carolina. I absolutely love compet-
ing in pageants because of the opportunities to make a difference, make new friends, and the numerous
scholarships awarded.
As for teens that would like to follow in Hopes footsteps, she shares
several tips to help you along the way: (1)Be yourself no matter
what! You should never conform yourself to what you feel like the
judges are looking for. Remember, you are a role model for many
young girls. You cannot tell them to accept themselves if you have
not also already done so. (2)Dont forget what its all about!
Its bigger than just a beauty pageant. Its about the impact you
will have on the lives of others during your reign. (3)Dont forget
to have fun! During the competition dont forget to make friends
and have fun! Some of my best friends were my fellow contestants
in past pageants. (4)Dont give up! Keep trying for a title even if
you dont win the first time. (5)Remember to be a role model in
all that you do. Young girls are always watching you and how you
handle yourself. Show them what it means to be a true lady!
Well said, Hope! And continued success to you as you soar and achieve greatness in all of your endeavors!

I absolutely love com-
peting in pageants be-
cause of the opportuni-
ties to make a differ-
ence, make new friends,
and the numerous schol-
arships awarded.

Walker Pruitt has long been a scout, but he
has now earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Walker started out about ten years ago as a Cub Scout
when his family and friends pushed him into scouting. It didnt take long for him to fall in love with it,
and now he has accomplished the highest rank. He said, If not for my friends I probably would not
have become a part of the Boy Scouts. My friends and family pushed me into the organization, I fell in
love with Scouting, and because of that love I obtained the highest rank of Eagle Scout.
The Scouts are involved in many different activities. Walker listed some for us, There is biking, camp-
ing, tubing, kayaking, sailing, canoeing, spelunking, rock climbing, survival skills, leadership skills, and
friendships, just to name a small amount of what the Boy Scouts do. As we can see, there are a great
deal of activities in which the scouts partake. For those of you interested in getting involved, Walker
gave some advice for aspiring scouts just starting out. He said, My top five tips for someone wanted
to join Scouts would be: (1) find a Scout Troop near you and get involved. (2) Make friends with the
adults and fellow scouts. (3) Get your parents involved. (4) Get started right away going to camp outs
and working on rank advancements. (5) Have fun!!
Walker also considers scouting a friendly organization and wants others to consider joining. He said,
One of the requirements to gain rank in Scouting is to actually bring a friend. We are an open com-
munity and support anyone wanting, willing, or thinking of joining. Walker would love for more boys
to get involved. He went on to say, There are very many Scouts involved now, but there is still a lot of
room for more boys.
Congratulations to Walker, and best of luck to the those climbing the ranks!
