SAMPLE FIVE PARAGRAPH ESSAY
On average, a student will write over 100 essays in his or her life. A five paragraph essay
is a form of writing that keeps an essay structured and focused. Teachers often require students
to use the five paragraph essay on tests and quizzes because it helps them organize their thoughts
and find good support for their answers. Every essay must have an introduction, body and
conclusion.
The introduction of a five paragraph essay tells the audience what the student will say in
the rest of the essay. According to a Writing Handbook, an introduction focuses the essay and
prepares the reader for what is to come. The first sentence in an introduction should catch the
readers’ attention and convince them to continue reading. Then, the student should give the
readers any background information that they may need to fully understand the information
presented in an essay. This is especially important if the author’s opinion is in the paper, so the
reader knows enough information to agree or disagree with the opinion presented. The final
sentence in an introduction is the Thesis Statement. This is the most important sentence in the
whole essay. The Thesis first lists the topic then lists a short description of the three main points
that will be discussed in the later paragraphs.
The body paragraphs are the content of the essay. This is where all of the facts, quotes,
opinions, and details are written. Each body paragraph should start with a topic sentence. The
topic sentence gives a summary of what will be discussed in the rest of the paragraph. It should
name the first point. Then, the student should give at least one good quote, fact, or evidence that
will support the topic sentence. The same format is used for all three body paragraphs.
The final paragraph is the conclusion. The first sentence in the conclusion will restate the
thesis, basically giving a summary of what was said in the essay. Be sure to include the three
points used in the thesis statement. Then, the student can include any final comments on the topic
and close with a sentence that wraps up the topic.
The introduction, body, and conclusion are the three parts of a five paragraph essay. It is
essential that every student understands the format of an essay in order to be successful in
school. This type of essay will be used by teachers in high school and college for years to come.
