This document announces a conference to discuss improving health outcomes for Gypsy and Traveller communities in the UK. English Gypsies and Irish Travelers experience significant health inequalities, including low life expectancy and poor prenatal outcomes. The conference will explore how clinical commissioning groups can reduce inequalities through culturally sensitive services. Speakers will share learning from a national health inclusion project and case studies. Attendees will include health professionals, advocacy groups, and Gypsy/Traveler organizations. Parallel sessions will address asset-based community engagement, advocacy, dementia care, trust in healthcare, and collaboration between patients and providers.

Health on the margins Commissioning to tackle health

inequalities in Gypsy and Traveller

communities
26 February 2015, Central Birmingham

About the conference

Speakers (subject to change)

English Gypsy and Irish Traveller people are among those

experiencing the most significant inequality in healthcare
access and outcomes in the UK, including low life
expectancy, high co-morbidity, poor mental health, poor
infant and maternal outcomes.

The Health and Social Care Act put in place legal duties on
Clinical Commissioning Groups to reduce health
inequalities.

This conference explore ways that improved health and

wellbeing outcomes, and reduction of costs associated with
health inequality, can be secured via integrated and
culturally sensitive commissioning and service provision
based in effective local relationships.

Leeds Gypsy and Traveller Exchange and Friends,

Families and Travellers - in cooperation with a range of
other organisations have worked together on the National
Gypsy and Traveller Health Inclusion Project. Learning from
this strategic 3-year project, as well as first hand case study
experiences, will be shared at the conference. We will
examine commissioning and implementation support
identified and developed during the project.
