B. BRIEF STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The client was a self-referred patient of the psychiatric ward. Before being admitted, the patient
was experiencing extreme sadness and distress caused by pressures from school, family, and other
responsibilities. A week before the interview, the client attempted to commit suicide by slashing her
wrist. But instead of pursuing this attempt, the client decided to seek help.

C. INITIAL INTERVIEW
(Family and Personal History)
The client did not have any previous mental health condition prior to being admitted to the ward.
It was also her first attempt to commit suicide.
During the interview, the researchers were able to glean that the client was extremely stressed
by the environment within her school. The patient was taking up a Bachelors Degree in European
Studies at the University of the Philippines Diliman. But during her first year in college, she was
originally studying Psychology. She took this course for a year then shifted to her current studies
because she was not quite fond of Psychology. The patient even joked that the course does not fit her
because she is the one who needs psychoanalyzing.
In the patients current classes, there are only 3 other students taking up the same course.
Professors of the patient have therefore quite a focused and hands-on approach in teaching. One
professor of the patient is full-blooded German who speaks in his native tongue which makes for a
much harder time understanding lessons. The patient has expressed a strong desire to move to a
different school. She revealed that before attempting to commit suicide, she has been skipping her
classes and going to movies instead; while her parents knew nothing about it. However, there is still
refusal to discuss the specific factors that made her do such things aside from experiencing difficulties

with her studies. The patient also mentioned not having enough sleep because of having to finish
schoolwork.
When asked what would be the first thing she will do once she is discharged from the ward, the
patient mentioned taking care of a certain niece. When the researchers asked if she intends to go back
to school to finish her degree, the patient said that she does not want to study anymore.
Aside from these, not much information was divulged by the patient. It appears that she is still
very much guarded. The patient also was unable to point out specifically what triggered her emotional
breakdown.

D. CONCLUSION
Due to time constraints and the early discharge of the patient, the researchers were not able to
gather more information about the patient. The administering of projective tests was also cancelled.
Therefore, the researchers believe that there is not sufficient information and evidence gathered in
order to come up with an appropriate clinical impression.

However, based from the available data, and observations made by the researchers, most of
the symptoms manifested by the patient point to a Mild Depressive Disorder with Anxious Distress.
