CAREER AND WORK COUNSELLING DIPLOMA
This program trains students for a wide range of career counselling settings and
develops their sensitivity and skills in dealing with diverse clients and client needs. A
career and work counsellor advises individuals on career planning, school-to-work
transition, re-entering the workforce, retirement planning and changing or revising
inappropriate career choices. Graduates may find employment in career counselling,
work rehabilitation, job search facilitation, corporate career planning, employment
counselling and vocational assessment for education, business, government,
community agencies and consulting organizations. The advisory board includes
renowned career counsellors and representatives from government, education,
business and community services who are dedicated to meeting the diverse and
challenging needs of the workforce.
Admission Requirements:
Ontario Secondary School Diploma with Grade 12
English or equivalent. All applicants are first required to attend an information session
and then a structured interview. All applicants will submit a letter of intent with their
personal goals, and provide references at their interview session.
Advanced Standing: Applicants who have a recognized degree or diploma in Canada
will be given advanced standing. Applicants whose degree or diploma is from outside
Canada must have it officially evaluated to a minimum of a 2 year college diploma or a 3
year university degree.
Advanced standing allows you to receive exemptions of certain courses automatically.
These are Work and Life and Intro to Psych. If you are eligible for exemptions in
English or your General Electives please see next page for contact info. You are
responsible for applying for these.
Admission Timelines:
For September admission, the interview process starts in
March and goes to August. For the January semester, the admission process is from
October until mid December. For information, please call 416-415-5000, ext. 3690
Courses may be cancelled if enrollment is not high enough.
Graduation Procedure: Graduation is not automatic when you are a part time student.
When you have completed all your required courses, please notify the part time
program coordinator and your diploma will be mailed to you.
If you wish to attend
convocation exercises (held only in June), you must fill in a graduation request form in
March or early April, available from either the divisional office or through our George
Brown College website.

You are required to make up any failed or dropped courses before
you are eligible to graduate. Please note you will be required to pay
fees for any courses you are retaking. You can make up these courses
during the day, and some are offered at night through Continuing
Education, but please check with your program staff to ensure that night
school courses are equivalent to what is taught in the full-time program.
Please note that some courses may not be offered in every semester; our
staff can assist you in any special timetable requirements you may have.

take COMM 1003 English Skills or CESL 1003 English Skills before
progressing to COMM 1007, you will be charged for these extra

In order to graduate you must pass all courses in your program while
maintaining a minimum GPA of 1.7
CWC- In order to be successful in this program please take note of the following
information:
CARC 1006 Individual Career Counselling; Skills and Process 1 requires a pass of
70% on the exam to pass the course and as this is a core requirement for all other
courses
one cannot progress to third semester without being successful in this course.
CARC 1018 Individual Career Counselling: Skills and Process 2 requires a pass of 70%
on exam to pass the course
CARC 2022 Group Career Counselling requires a pass of 70% on exam to pass the
course
CARC 1014 Assessment in Career Counselling : Statistics and Tests requires a grade
of 80% to pass the course and receive Level B certification in tests and measurements
CARC 1020 Resources in the Field requires 100% attendance to receive external
certification in Career Employment and Information Specialist
Common Assessment requires a pass of 70% on the assessment tape for external
certification in Common Assessment

CARC 2031 - Theory and Practice of Job Search II (Formerly Assessment III)
This course examines various non-standardized career inventories and self-assessment
career exploration exercises and job search strategies utilizing career profiles and other
promotional materials. Students will learn in detail how inventories such as workplace
values and skills cards can assist clients in preparing for interviews and focusing
resumes. Students will also learn how to showcase achievements in a portfolio and
how to teach clients how to use a portfolio during the interview process. Lessons in
how to create and revise other self-marketing materials including resumes, CVs, cover
letters and business cards will also be included.

The workshop covers the 8 step Common Assessment model used as an initial
employment planning process in many organizations in Toronto and parts of Ontario.
The workshop builds on students knowledge of communication and relationship skills
plus the employability dimensions. Students who demonstrate ability on a taped
interview receive a Common Assessment Certificate from the College.

This workshop certifies you to utilize Personality Dimensions with clients in team

Please note: Field Integration courses and Practicum EACH have a fee. Grades
cannot be submitted unless payment has been made. These courses have
continuous intake from September to late June. There are no courses offered in the
summer months. Your fee for the courses will be a onetime fee for the year, if
necessary, until late June or the completion of the practicum. If the practicum takes
longer the student will have to register again in the fall semester. The prerequisites
for the practicum are Overview of Career and Work Counselling, Individual Career
Counselling I, and Theory and Practice of Job Search.
