All Conditionals

The document summarizes the four conditional structures in English: 1) The zero conditional is used for situations that are always true and uses present tense in both parts. For example, "If you don't water the plants, they die." 2) The first conditional is used for possible future actions and uses present tense + will + verb. For example, "If you work hard, you will pass the exam." 3) The second conditional expresses imaginary or remote possibilities and uses past tense for the if-clause and "would" for the main clause. For example, "If I had more money, I would buy a car." 4) The third conditional expresses regret about past possibilities and uses

As your teachers have told you you have to revise what you know

about the conditionals.

May I remind you of the uses and theory of them
Im telling you as clear as possible a strategy and technique to do it
properly.

THE ZERO CONDITIONAL

Rules:
It is used for a situation which is

always true

The tense ( present tense ) is the same in both

parts of the conditional.

If you dont water the plants

they die
Example :

Explanation:
Its absolutely certain that one day or another the plants die
if you dont wter them
Question: Why do we call this a ZERO CONDITIONAL?
Because there is no change of the tense
( present tense ) and it
always happens

THE FIRST CONDITIONAL

Rules:
It is used for a posible future action which depends
on another action
The tenses are as follows: If + present tense +
.will + verb

If you work hard you will pass

the exam
Example:

Warning!!!!! See the difference between this conditional and the

zero conditional:

In the zero conditional is sure to happen

In this first conditional there is a possibility but it

is not absolutely true

THE SECOND CONDITIONAL

Rules:
It is used to express an imaginary situation at the
moment of speaking
Its like a dream for the moment of

speaking
It can also be used for a remote possibility in
the future
You must use the past for the condition and

would + the verb in the main sentence

Examples of both uses :

If I had more money , I would (Id) buy a car (a

present dream)
( I havent got enough money at the
moment)
If I won the competition, Id go on a world cruise
( a possibility in the future )

THE THIRD CONDITIONAL

Rules:
It is used for an imaginary situation referring
to a past action
Its like a lament but you cant change the
events.
If + past perfect
Perfect conditional
Example:
If I had not arrived late I would have
done the exam

Look at these examples:

Ann stole the money so she went to prison

She couldnt change things .She couldnt avoid
prison . So the only thing she could do was to regret it but
nothing else.:
If Ann hadnt stolen the money , she wouldnt have
gone to
prison
This conditional is also called : THE IMPOSSIBLE
CONDITION because you cant change things
