Dodecahedron Model

Use the templates on the next page to create a 12-sided geometric ball,
called a dodecahedron. This paper model is made of pentagon-shaped
paper cutouts that are glued together to form a globe.
This project is fun and educational and can be used as a tool for math,
science, art, and so much more!

What You Need:

-

Template (see the next page)

Paper
Glue Stick
Markers, Crayons, Colored Pencils
Monofilament Fishing Line (optional)

Uses for your Globe:

1. Make a paper globe to celebrate
Earth Day!
2. Make a model of the continents of
our Earth.
3. Write and draw something about
you on each panel, to form a
biography ball!
4. Make a globe-shaped story! Write
and draw parts of a story on each
panel, then give it to a friend to see
if they can read the story in the
correct order.
5. Write a report and make it into a
ball!
6. Make a photo ball by attaching
pictures of your favorite subject to
each panel.

What You Do:

te p

te p

te p

Print six copies of the template on the next page,

then cut out the circles. You will need a total of 12
circles to form the dodecahedron model.
The pentagon shapes on the circle will become the faces of the model. Decide what you would like to draw within
this pentagon shape, one for each circle that you cut out. See our ideas above and online to help get you started.
When your drawings are completed, fold the edges of the cutouts along the dotted lines of the
patterns. You may fold the edges forward if you want the glued edges showing, or fold the edges
inward if you want the glued edges inside the ball.

Fold

Glue

Glue the pentagon-shaped cutouts together using a glue stick.

As you glue the cutouts together, a globe will form. Using the template on the next page will produce a
dodecahedron model that is just a little smaller than the size of a soccer ball.

Attach a piece of monofilament fishing line to the top of the globe in order to hang it from the ceiling.

Tips:
-

When folding the edges in step 3, use a straight edge, such as a credit card
as your guide! Place the credit card along the dotted line, then fold the
paper up and over the card. This creates a perfect, straight fold.
To create a larger or smaller model, enlarge or reduce the template using a
copy machine.
Experiment with different types of paper: copier paper, construction paper, or
cardstock.
