stores is dwindling. When they are gone,
the Xinghes engine will use components
from the Daixhings Ying Huo Chong torch,
limiting its maximum thrust to 0.5g.
The eventual replacement of the Xinghe
is a matter of concern in the Celestial
Navy. Nothing on the drawing boards
can match it or perform its necessary,
if expensive, mission. The Treasury
remains steadfast in its opposition to the
development of a successor vessel that
would significantly increase the Navys
budget while tying up yard capacity.

Development and Class Notes
A long and checkered history makes the
So Paulo one of the oddest designs
in known space. Intended as convoy
escorts or raiders, and armed with 2400
nanometer lasers for compatibility
with the FN in mission planning, the
designers of the original Brazilian San
Salvador class expected them to face an
intense seeking weapon threat. Rather
than dilute their defensive firepower by
spreading the weapons around the ship,
the design team chose to concentrate
the heavy offensive weaponry forward,
light offensive weaponry to port, and a
massive zone defense suite to starboard.

The controversy over this assymetrical
design has never died down.
it boasts a phenomenal zone defense
suite to starboard.
Mothballed soon after the loss of contact
with Earth, the So Paulo was pulled
out of retirement in 2229 for a refit at
Novaya Rossiyas Nikitin Yard. Novo
Brasils faltering economy prevented it
from meeting the schedule of payments
to Novaya Rossiya and bickering over
these payments materially contributed
to souring relations between the two
countries. Inevitably, work proceeded
slowly on the So Paulo.
The So Paulos design makes it arguably
the best 5,000 ton commerce raider
known. It boasts enormous cruise
endurance, plenty of fuel, and extensive
berthing for prize crews, supplemented
by two docks for fuel and supply pods. Its
weapons can easily handle the gunboats
some convoys carry for defense, while
its endurance should permit it to evade
heavier opponents. With the end of the
So Paulos service life near, analysts
expect Novo Brasil to replace it with a
made-to-order modification of a Kuan
Yin hull.
The So Paulos Delta and Gamma
hyperdrives had been removed for
overhaul, but Novo Brasil could not
afford replacements. Plans to replace
them with more power systems likewise
foundered on a lack of cash. Ultimately,
increased reactor armor filled the space,
not least because the aging reactors
original shielding was failing. Xing
Cheng provided a replacement Epsilon
hyperdrive as a diplomatic overture.
The difficulties in finding cash and
parts during the refit at the Nikitin Yard
contributed to the patchwork of weapons
on the So Paulo. This, along with the
near continuous deployment of the ship,
causes no end of maintenance issues.
During the Twelve Hour War (2258) the
So Paulo narrowly survived the battle
in which it destroyed the Olympusclass Patroclos. Forced to retreat to
Xing Cheng for extensive repairs, the
absence of replacement parts there
forced the wholesale replacement of
several components, including several
lasers. Structural repairs required the
replacement of the starboard side
gunboat dock with a simple pod dock.
While the So Paulo lacks a significant
alpha strike at any given range, it also
presents a threat to targets at all ranges,
mixing seeking weapons, medium range
lasers, and short range lasers. In addition,
