INTRODUCTION
METSEC SFS
Metsec SFS fast track building systems are specified to construct
Gainsborough
infill and continuous walling, low-rise stand alone buildings and
high bay separating walls. SFS has all the benefits of cold-rolled
sections; supreme versatility, buildability, high speed construction
and significant reductions in dead loadings. The warm frame
approach achieves excellent thermal performance and the
system is ideal for low ground bearing pressure situations.
The precision engineered components facilitate reduced building
maintenance and reduce site material wastage. The net effect is a
reduction in programme timescales and project costs. Metsec SFS is
the ideal partner for British Gypsum linings. The two combine
seamlessly to achieve the fire, acoustic and thermal performance
levels required within the built environment.

The installed system will need to meet specific fire, acoustic
and thermal performance criteria. British Gypsum insulation and
lining specifications are available to meet the most onerous
performance requirements. They are fully substantiated by
extensive, independent tests carried out at British Gypsums
Stand alone structures, particularly roof top extensions, stick

EXTERNAL WALLING
The Metsec Steel Framing System (SFS) provides infill or continuous
frame panel support for the majority of exterior cladding materials
including brickwork. It is suitable for both low-rise or high-rise
construction. Stud size, spacing and anchorage are determined
by the floor to floor heights, deflection criteria and lateral wind
load pressures.
The system combines high performance with fast, dry construction
techniques. The building can be made weather tight at an early
stage in the construction programme by fixing rigid foam insulation.
Centre for Life, Newcastle upon Tyne
If required Isowool insulation, from British Gypsum-Isover, is fitted
into the stud cavity to enhance the thermal insulation performance.
The use of lightweight steel sections avoids the problems inherent
in the use of timber sections.
n Early weather protection to the building
n Lightweight, dry construction
n Pre-fabrication on or off-site
n Achieves high thermal and acoustic performances
n Wind posts not required
n Gives lateral support to most external cladding materials
n Minimises wet trades on site
An unlimited range of project solutions is available using either
infill or continuous external walling. Whatever the project, the
design flexibility of Metsec SFS external wall options will enable
the challenge to be met.

HIGH BAY
SEPARATING WALLS
Metsec SFS High Bay Wall is a high performance single span separating
wall. Its lightweight construction and uniformly distributed loading
normally obviates the need to strengthen foundations or existing
floors. This reduces the time required for installation and minimalises
the overall project cost.
n Dry construction techniques.
n No need to strengthen foundations in most cases.
David Lloyd Centre, Liverpool
n Up to 3 hours fire resistance using British Gypsum boards.
n Full height studs up to 16m.
n Straightforward to build.
The high performance characteristics of the wall coupled
with ease of build qualities make this the first choice
solution for many commercial, public and industrial projects.
In addition to achieving high levels of fire protection,
using British Gypsums Gyproc and Glasroc boards, the walls
can provide acoustic insulation up to Rw62dB.

METFRAME
THE SYSTEM
Based on an excellent track record and proven engineering
principles, Metframe is specified for medium rise building
superstructures.
Metframe uses lightweight, cold rolled, galvanized steel sections in
bolt together pre-engineered panels to form storey high walls.
These combined with structurally efficient floors provide the
stability and integrity to the building, eliminating the need
for a steel or concrete primary frame. External wall panels are
highly insulated and their design allows for architectural flexibility
in the size and location of window and door openings.
In-house detailing ensures that, following approval of the detailed
model, electronic transfer of details of individual components to the
rolling mills is fast and accurate including dimensions, bolt hole
locations and any counter forming requirements.
British Gypsum works
closely with Metsec in a
continuous programme to
develop drywall construction
methods to satisfy all of the latest
statutory fire, thermal and acoustic
requirements. Independent test data is
available to substantiate these solutions.
Metframe is used for a diverse range of
medium rise structures. Successfully
completed projects include hotels, hospitals,
nursing homes, apartments, schools and
student accommodation.

METFRAME
ASSEMBLY
RING BEAM
The ringbeam of a cold-rolled galvanized C-section is an essential
part of the Metframe structure. Once installed it forms the level
base for all load bearing walls as well as establishing the set out
lines for all floors. Angle cleats are anchored to the foundations
and the vertical leg is fixed to the external face of the C-section
ringbeam. When all ringbeams are installed the ground floor slab
is poured using the ringbeam as a permanent shutter, which
provides a level base for the wall panels.
W A L L F A B R I C AT I O N
The approved Metsec installer will deliver panels to site and erect
them. External panels have foil-faced rigid foam insulation and
brick-tie channels or cement particle board for render factory fitted
during fabrication. Panels will include all door and window
apertures to receive windows by others.
FLOOR LOADING
Prior to fixing floor decking to the top of wall panels, each room is
loaded out with bathroom pods and plasterboard together with
any other finishing materials. The early loading out of materials in
this manner greatly improves the finishing works programme.

METFRAME
ASSEMBLY
FLOOR DECKING
The Metframe system incorporates structural metal decking to
form an in-situ concrete floor. This gives significant advantages in
relation to acoustic and fire requirements.
When required within the Building Regulations, resistance to
progressive collapse is provided by continuous reinforcement bars
acting as ties at panel heads.
ROOFS
The Metframe structure is designed to accommodate virtually any
roof finish from traditional concrete tiles to composite panels.
The roof structure can be timber trusses or steel depending on
architectural requirements.
