1. Case Study: Stage Collapses at the Indiana State Fair: Update the information in the
case, focusing on the specific issues in the case. Who should have been the final decision
maker regarding the concert? Why?
In August 2011, The Indiana State Fair stage collapse, was an incident in an outdoor
concert by Sugarland, were temporarily constructed at Indiana State Fair. The temporarily
constructed stage had collapsed due associated less significant techniques, materials and
facilities. Within the constructed stage, a wind gust through an approached severe thunderstorm
and had hit the stage, and resulted as a temporarily designed structure get collapsed. This
structure landed with considerable amount of crowd and had killed seven people and injured
more than 50 people, Jack Nicas (2012, April).
These temporary structure constructed for very convenient use with a cost materials, and
get assemble in less time. Therefore, the main issue was with this stage, found due to temporary
designing approach with less significant materials, cost and time. Moreover, engineer group
should also be responsible for these insufficient efforts while designing the stage which had
collapsed with a thunderstorm wind.
There must be a Board of Directors whom required a special attention while construction
was taking place; technically, therere should be engineers verification, and expert technicians
for temporarily structural design and labor contractor, Jack Nicas (2012, April).
At the other end, Management Team must include; event organizing firm, whom must
ensure that everything was good enough to prevent any unforeseen situation like; wind
thunderstorm, etc.

Discussions

I would suggest, it should have included three main structural components which need to
be consider while constructing this structure in order to resisting the gravity and/or lateral loads,
therefore, three systems are, John Tuohy and Carrie Ritchie (2012);
Foundation: It should be good enough to support the gravity load of the structure and to hold
the structure down when lateral loads apply and an overturning moment is present.
Superstructure: Its also an important part of structure and includes the scaffolding type
structure that used to support the gravity loads of the structure, For instance; an audio and
lighting equipment and involved crowd whether they are creating the structure, performing,
and/or working with lighting equipment.
Stability System: This consists of stimulation and other members in order to resist the lateral
loads, such members can consist of diagonal bracing, the use of cables and jersey barriers, or
other required structural elements.

2). Discuss why team learning is as important as individual learning in crisis management
situations. What is meant by the idea of building resilience through redundancy?
Yes, its true to have a team learning required to manage any project or business as
compare to individual learning especially while managing any crisis; we must have a team
management in order to prevent the unavoidable unforeseen situation in project or business.
There are various reasons which insist to have a team while managing the crisis
management system, Crandall, W., Parnell, J., & Spillan, J. (2009);

A team will be able to handle the situation that could belong to different area of
specialization where a team can include the number of specialized persona and a single
person couldnt have all skills which required to handle the situation.

Discussions

A team work is more effective as compare to individual and crisis management system
require to have a team that could take immediate actions while any unforeseen situation
arises.

Team availability can be approached easily and there is no confirmation of individual

availability while crisis need to take immediate action.

Required to handle the situation soon while a significant could do able to control the
situation as less as required time that couldnt be possible by any individual.

3).Summarize the key facts and issues of the "Melamine Milk Crisis in China and update
the information in the case focusing your response on the specific issues in the case
In 2008, a food safety incident of Chinese milk scandal, had created issues within the
China and it was estimated that approximate 300,000 victims were, due to this incidence. This
scandal begun and had included various chemicals mixer within milk and milk products that
caused to appear to have a higher rate of protein within the milk and/or milk products which had
damaged few infant kidneys and other kidney associated diseases and an estimated of 55,000
were hospitalized, Scott McDonald (2008, September).
Issue were observed in July 2008, when in a hospital, an infant had found kidney stone
due to milk powder that was used to serve them, Scott McDonald (2008, September).
Shijiazhuang is one of the Company that served various branches within many states and
were mixing chemicals in milk powder. However, this scandal began with the revelations of
contamination of Sanlu in the milk products. The New Zealand dairy cooperative Fonterra, had
owned more than 40% stake in Sanlu, Scott McDonald (2008, September). There are many
companies whom were involved within this scandal are; Shijiazhuang Sanlu Group, Shanghai

Guangming Yingxiong Dairy, Inner Mongolia Mengniu Dairy, Guangdong Yashili Group,
Torador Dairy Industry (Tianjin), Yantai Leilei Dairy, Shanghai Baoanli Dairy, Xi'an Baiyue
Dairy, etc.

There are many factors which are associated of such crisis as;

Food providers wanted to make more profits and had supplied milk and various other
milk products in order to get more benefits.

Less efforts required to prepare the products as compare to pure milk products only.

Milk products couldnt be keep useable not more than 2 days after the manufacture but
with the use of chemicals it can be store for more than 5 days.

Low production costing.

Low amount of raw materials requirement i.e. less amount of milk, could help to prepare
more products.
