PHILOSOPHY OF
EDUCATION
ROFEROS, AREN M.
MILLAN, IAN TERESA E.
In public, teachers and
others of authority must indicate that
what is being said is their personal
opinion and does not represent the
institution that they are affiliated with.
The authority to define
and enforce academic freedom lies
with the institution.
ACADEMIC FREEDOM
Definition
Freedom of a student to explore any f
eld or hold any
belief without interference from the
teacher.
The freedom of teachers and students
to express their ideas in school
without religious or political or
institutional restrictions is called
academic freedom.
is the freedom of teachers and
students to teach, study, and pursue
knowledge and research without
unreasonable interference or
restriction from law, institutional
regulations, or public pressure.
Importance
Essential to the mission of the
academy
It gives assurance that academics in
all areas of expertise are expected to
challenge what we think we know and
to push the boundaries what is known.
Misconception
The constitution grants the teacher the right
to say anything s/he wants in the classroom.
Academic Freedom shall be
enjoyed in all institutions of higher
learning says section 5(2) of article
XIV of the constitution
Conflict with Institutional Academic
Freedom
Institutions reserve the right to determine
Who may teach
Who may be taught
How it shall be taught
How many be admitted to study
Interpretation
Teachers need to avoid
controversial issues that are not
related to the subject being taught.
Students & Academic Freedom
Teachers make every reasonable effort
to foster honest academic conduct and
to assure their evaluations of students
reflect each students true merit.
They avoid any exploitation,
harassment, or discriminatory
treatment of students protecting their
academic freedom.
In the Philippines
THE PROVISION OF ARTICLE XIV,
SECTION 1 OF THE 1987 PHILIPPINE
CONSITITUTION GUARANTEES THE
PROTECTION AND PROMOTION OF THE
RIGHT OF ALL CITIZENS TO QUALITY
EDUCATION AT ALL LEVELS AND THE
TAKING OF APPROPRIATE STEPS TO
MAKE SUCH EDUCATION ACCESIBLE
TO ALL. THE DEMOCRATIZATION OF
ACCESS TO QUALITY EDUCATION
REFFERED TO IN THIS PROVISION AND
THE RIGHT TO SELECT A PROFESSION
IS SUBJECT TO FAIR, REASONABLE,
AND EQUITABLE ADMISSION AND
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS.
ARTICLE XIV, SECTION 5 NO. (2)
PROVIDES; ACADEMIC FREEDOM
SHALL ENJOYED IN ALL INSTITUTION
OF HIGHER LEARNING
ACADEMIC FREEDOM IN INSTITUTIONS
OF HIGHER LEARNING GIVES THE
INSTITUTIONS THE RIGHT TO
DETERMINE WHOM TO ADMIT AND TO
SET STANDARDS OF ADMISSION.
Justice Speaks
Teachers and students must always
remain free to inquire, to study and to
evaluate, to gain new maturity and
understanding; otherwise our
civilization stagnate and die.
To impose any strait jacket upon the
intellectual leaders in our colleges and
universities would imperil the future of
our Nation.
Chief Justice Earl Warren (Sweezy,
1957)
Conclusion
To protect academic freedom in the
long run we need EDUCATIONAL
PROGRAMS
