BSc MANAGEMENT AND SECURITY STUDIES

UniSIMs School of Business welcomes your interest in
our programmes and appreciates the time taken to read
this brochure. You have now taken the first and most
important step in developing your path towards life-long
learning.
There are two main activities called the Security Studies
Distinguished Scholar Series of Talks and Security
Studies Distinguished Visitor Series of Talks that keep
the students in touch with experts from the industry.
These include military officers, senior police officers as
well as diplomats and academics. A third activity
involves site visits to security-sensitive and confidential
agencies including Central Narcotics Bureau, the
Internal Security department, and the Changi Airport
Aviation Security Division.

takes a modern approach to understanding how

security is achieved and maintained, and investigates
why some organisations and communities are more
susceptible to insecurity than others. The
aftermath of 9/11, Prague Spring, Arab Spring, the
Syrian debacle, and Thai protest culture are only a
handful of incidents where public demonstrations
had overwhelmed governments. Regimes are
always in danger of being toppled. Regimes rise
and fall under the weight of their own legitimacy
and non-legitimacy; but this is only a small reason
why Security Studies is interesting. There are also
many thought-provoking personalities and leaders
in Southeast Asia, the Pacific, Europe, South Asia,
America, and the Far East. The political and security
arena is replete with fascinating theories, concepts,
ideas and facts.
Our Instructors will lead you along rational and
logical analyses of burning issues such as corruption,
human trafficking, and drug enforcement in Southeast Asia. There is a degree of focus on Southeast
Asian security because we live in this part of the
world and ought to know it better than those who
do not.

Reading is a habit that has to be cultivated. Whether

one studies at UniSIM, at work, or in the comfort of
ones home, good students will always learn more by
developing an interest in reading widely. Remember: it
is never too late to learn about issues in Security Studies
such as terrorism, cybersecurity, food security and the
impact of environmental and population change on
states and governments.

Programme Overview

We bring the business world into the classroom and

the class into the business world. The Management
and Security Studies programme is one of many
programmes at the UniSIM School of Business.

What is Security Studies?

Security Studies is a growing sub-field within the
academic discipline of political science. Security Studies
cannot be defined in a few sentences but tends to
involve the intellectual examination of how security is
achieved and maintained. Security Studies encompasses
both traditional security and non-traditional security
(NTS). The former involves the study of power, authority,
justice, equality, legitimacy and governance. The latter
or NTS is about the study of feminism, women and
gender; environmental security; health security; cybersecurity and information security. Security studies

This degree programme provides you with

contemporary management and Security Studies
knowledge with additional competencies in
business and general management. It equips you
with managerial, numerical and analytical skills that
every security analyst and security manager
requires.
This programme is designed for applicants who are
Singaporeans and Singapore PRs in the following
groups: Singapore Police Force (SPF) officers,
including Police National Service Men (PNSmen) and
Volunteer Special Constabulary (VSCs), other Home
Team Department (HTD) officers and Auxiliary
Police Officers (APOs), other Public Service Officers
(including MINDEF) and members of the public
working in the security related industry (e.g. private
security firms, hotel security, etc.)
This programme will enable you to widen your
horizons as a graduate of UniSIM in a rapidly globalising world. The modular structure of the degree
offers you the flexibility of scheduling your courses
in a way that allows you to balance your studies
with career, family and social responsibilites. The

robust academic standards, dedicated faculty, effective

administrative and student support, and the latest

independent learning environment.
BSMSS emphasises self-study. This is because without
self-study, even the best minds will be unable to thrive.
Self-study is part of our life-long journey in learning.
Self-study does not end, but renews itself every day.
Graduates of this programme have career opportunities
in the following areas:
Aviation Security Management
