Safety Guidelines for Power Plant Chemists

This document provides guidance on safety procedures for chemists working in power generation stations. It discusses concepts of safety including avoiding injuries and equipment damage. Key steps to ensure safety are following safe work procedures, inspecting work areas, training workers, and using personal protective equipment. The document also describes common chemicals used like hydrochloric acid, caustic soda, chlorine, ammonia, and their properties, health hazards, safety data sheets, safe handling procedures, and first aid measures in the event of exposure. Personal protective equipment appropriate for each chemical is also outlined.

Safety in Power

Generating Stations
Welcome to Chemists

The concept of safety

It is nothing but carrying out
the work without any injury to
the persons working or damage
to the equipment and also
eliminating the hazards at work
place.

How to achieve the safety

at work place.
By adopting safe work procedures
By inspecting the work area
thoroughly and removing unsafe
conditions before carrying out work.
By training the workers and
removing the unsafe acts of workers
By insisting on wearing personal
protective equipment

Systems
Check the systems available before
carrying out any job
System means any apparatus,
instrument or equipment used for
operation, maintenance or testing.
System also involves work force in
case of labour works, in such a
case we have to ascertain the
persons are fit or not.

chemists first should know the

operating procedures
thoroughly.
Knowing chemical name and its
formula is equally important.
They must know the effects of
chemical

Identify the chemical by looking

at it physically.
Handling methods of the
chemicals.
Danger involved in handling.
Reaction of chemicals if they
are mixed with other chemicals.

Material safety data sheets

Every chemical has certain
properties.
Each chemical has its own effects
ex: like mixing with other chemicals,
spilling on floors equipment and on
persons.
The material safety data sheet
explains very clearly about the
properties of chemicals.

What is in MSDS

Technical name
Synonyms
Chemical formula
Product usage
Physical and chemical properties
Fire and explosion data
Reactivity data
Health hazard data
First aid measures etc.

Chemicals we use

Hydrochloric acid (HCl)

Caustic Soda ( NaOH)
Chlorine Cl2
Ammonia NH3
Try sodium phosphate (Na3PO4)
Hydrogen hydrate (N2H4)

Hydrochloric acid (HCl)

For water treatment, Colourless

pH-1, pungent smell
Boiling point : 110Deg C
Non flammable
Reacts with Ammonia
Corrosive in nature

Hydrochloric acid (HCl)

health hazard data
Skin contact , ingestion and vapour
inhalation
Corrosive to human tissue
Burns
Permissible limit : 5PPM
Teeth damage, ulcers, respiratory
track

Hydrochloric acid (HCl)

preventive measures

Bulk storage in rubber lined tanks

Adequate ventilation
Acid resistant flooring
Dyke wall
Leakage subside with large quantity of
water
Neutralize with soda ash
Pumping through rubber lined rigid piping

PPE
Face shield,
rubber hand
gloves, gum boot,
protective clothing

First aid
Eyes / skin wash
affected area with
large quantity of water
Ingestion- large intake
of water

Caustic Soda (NaOH)

For water treatment, Solid Flakes

Snow white colour, odourless
pH-14
Boiling point : 1390Deg C
Non flammable
Reacts with violently with Acids

Caustic Soda (NaOH)

health hazard data
Skin contact , ingestion and dust
inhalation
Eye and skin irritation, Corrosive to
human tissue
Sore throat, vomiting
Permissible limit : 2 mg/CuM

Caustic Soda (NaOH)

preventive measures
Storage: in HDPE bags indoor
Adequate ventilation
Adequate ventilation, raised place

PPE
Face shield,
rubber hand
gloves, gum boot,
protective clothing

First aid
Antidotes
Eyes wash with large
quantity of water
Ingestion : Large
intake of water

Chlorine ( Cl2)
For water treatment, Liquefied gas
under pressure and toxic.
Greenish yellow, pungent odour
Slightly soluble in water
Boiling point : - 34 Deg C
Non flammable
Chlorine & hydrogen mixture is
explosive.

Chlorine ( Cl2)

Skin contact , ingestion and inhalation
throat irritation, intense cough, difficulty
in breathing, vomiting, collapse.
Chronic exposure leads o permanent
loss in pulmonary function , Bronchitis,

Permissible limit : 1 PPM or 3mg/CuM

Chlorine ( Cl2)
preventive measures
Steel tanks or tonners or cylinders.
Adequate ventilation
Large spill neutralize with caustic soda,
slaked lime or soda ash.
Chlorine absorption systems, Heavier
than air so ventilation at the bottom of the
room.
Don't pour water on leak Containers
Leak point shall be always on top

PPE
Self contained

Provide fresh air
circulation, if breathing
ceased start artificial
respiration

Ammonia ( NH3)
preventive measures

Tonners or cylinders.
Adequate ventilation
Lighter than air
Soluble in water
Permissible limit 25 PPM
Pungent smell

Ammonia ( NH3)
preventive measures
Persons working at ammonia to
mask the nose with wet cloth
Effected person shall drink
large qty of water and then hot
milk
Ammonia reactive with copper,
