Optimization

This document discusses optimization and finding the maximum volume of a sheet of tin. It defines the domain of the volume function V as being between 0 and 6 inches. To find the maximum value, it takes the derivative of V and sets it equal to 0, yielding a critical point of x=2 inches. It then takes the second derivative and shows that it is negative at x=2, confirming it is a maximum point. Therefore, the maximum volume is achieved when the sheet is cut into two pieces of 2 inches each.

Optimization
Since the sides of the sheet of tin are only 12-in long, therefore, x 6 and hence the domain
for V is [0 , 6]
We need to find the maximum value of V. Now
dV
= 144 96x + 12x2
dx
Therefore
dV
= 0 = 144 96x + 12x2 = 0 = x = 2
dx

or

x=6

As x = 6 is an endpoint. Therefore the only critical point is x = 2. Furthermore,

d2 V
d2 V
= 96 + 24x =
= 96 + 24(2) = 48 < 0
dx2
dx2 x=2
