Calculus Math 310 Syllabus Fall

This document outlines the syllabus for MA 310 Calculus 1 taught in the fall of 2016. The course meets on Thursdays from 5:45-9:15pm in room 318. It is taught by Dr. Brian Nelson and has prerequisites of Math 210 and Tech Math II. Topics covered include limits, derivatives, integrals, and their applications. The objectives are to learn how to evaluate limits, calculate derivatives and integrals of algebraic functions, and apply these concepts to problems involving curves, maxima/minima, related rates, and finding velocities. Students will be graded based on 3 tests, homework assignments, class participation, and a final exam. Makeup work and late homework are allowed with deductions. Attendance follows

Telephone/Cell: 401- 580-4665
E-mail address: [email protected]
Course prerequisite(s): Math 210, Tech Math II
Required textbook/materials, Basic Technical Mathematics with Calculus by Allyn J
Washington. Tenth edition (ISBN- 13 978-0-13-311653-3) Any scientific calculator
Course description: Limits will be introduced and derivatives of algebraic functions will be
studied at length. Applications will include velocity and acceleration, curve
sketching, maxima and minima problems, and related rates. Indefinite and
definite integrals, including area under a curve as an application, will also be
studied. These topics are important for the future study of more mathematically
sophisticated ideas in physics, mechanics, and electronics.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of Ma 310, the student will be able to:
1) Evaluate the limit of a function.
2) Calculate derivatives of algebraic functions.
3) Solve various applications including curve sketching, max./min. problems, and related
rates.
4) Calculate definite and indefinite integrals in the form u as a polynomial function
raised to a power.
5) Calculate area under a curve using the fundamental theorem of calculus.
6) Find velocity and displacement, given acceleration, by integrating.
Mastery of all these objectives will be achieved by correctly solving such problems in
class, on homework assignments, on tests, and on a comprehensive final exam. All work
submitted will be carefully corrected and returned promptly.
Grading:
3 Tests 200 pts each
Homework 2030 pts each
Participation 10 pts/class
Final Exam-300 pts

Policy on makeup tests: Makeup assessments will be arranged between the student and
instructor.
Participation: The participation grade consists of any worksheets, practice tests, or group
projects that are done in class. You must attend class to do the assignments and they cannot be
made up. Attendance will be taken at the end of each class.
Homework: Homework will be assigned and collected each class. Homework that is turned in
late will be deducted 50% of the value of the assignment.
Attendance: This class will adhere strictly to the college rules concerning absenteeism as
outlined in the student handbook.
Academic Support: : Students are encouraged to see the instructor for extra help. The Academic
support services are available through the Academic Skills Center. The Math Lab, located East
Greenwich ( EA S103E) has the following hours for drop in tutoring in any math course.
