Homework 5
Due Oct 7 (on-campus)
Due Oct 11 (DEDP)
1. Ammonia is produced by the catalytic reaction of nitrogen and hydrogen.
a) Write the chemical reaction and balance it. Determine the stoichiometric coefficients.
b) If 15 mol/sec of H2 is fed to the reactor, determine the amount of N2 required if a 20.%
excess (of N2) is desired.
c) If 5.0 mol/sec of H2 exits the catalytic reactor, determine:
i)
ii) the number of moles of all three components exiting the reactor.
iii) the conversion of H2 and N2.
iv) the exiting concentration of H2, N2, and ammonia.
d) What are strategies to increase the conversion of H2?
2. A feed stream containing 2.00 mol/min of butane (C4H10), and a feed stream containing 130.0
mol/min of air are fed into a reactor. The butane reacts completely according to the following
reaction.
2 C4H10 + 13 O2 8 CO2 + 10 H2O
Assume that the air is 21.0 mol% O2 and 79.0 mol% N2.
a) Write a molar balance equation for each atomic species present.
b) Solve the equations for the flow rates of q1 (mol CO2/min), q2 (mol H2O/min), q3 (mol
N2/min), and q4 (mol O2/min).
3. At low to moderate pressures, the equilibrium state of the water-gas shift reaction
CO + H2O CO2 + H2
is approximately described by the relation
where T is the reactor temperature, Ke is the reaction equilibrium constant, and yi is the mole
fraction of species i in the reactor contents at equilibrium. The feed to a batch shift reactor
contains 20.0 mole% CO, 10.0% CO2, 40.0% water, and the balance an inert gas. The reactor
is maintained at T=1123 K.
a) Assume a basis of 1 mol feed and draw and label a flowchart.
b) Calculate the total moles of gas in the reactor at equilibrium (if it takes
you more than 5 seconds you're missing the point)
c) Calculate the equilibrium mole fraction of hydrogen in the product.
(Suggestion: Begin by writing expressions for the moles of each
species in the product gas in terms of the extent of reaction, and then
write expressions for the species mole fractions.)
