Case History

A 20-year old female medical student requested cotrimoxazole for cystitis, but had her last period 6 weeks ago and was sexually active. While she thought pregnancy was unlikely due to irregular periods after stopping birth control pills, the GP should not prescribe cotrimoxazole due to potential risk of harming an early pregnancy from the antibiotics, as confirmed pregnancy was not ruled out without a vaginal exam or pregnancy test.
