Engineering Torque Calculations

This document contains instructions for 5 assignments involving calculations of torque, shear stress, power transmission, and torsional stress. Assignment 1 involves calculating shear stress in a hollow steel shaft under a given torque load. Assignment 2 involves calculating shear stresses at different points along a copper pipe subjected to a distributed torque load. Assignment 3 involves determining the inner diameter of a steel tube needed to transmit a given power at a given rpm under a specified allowable shear stress. Assignment 4 involves determining the maximum power a tubular steel shaft can transmit under a given torque load without exceeding a maximum twist. Assignment 5 involves calculating the maximum torsional stress in a rod at a given point due to the weight of the rod.

Assignment-5 (Total points 100)

Due Date: Oct 11, 2016

1. A hollow steel shaft with an outside diameter of 100 mm and a wall thickness of 10 mm is
subjected to a pure torque of T = 5,500 N-m. (a) Determine the maximum shear stress in the
hollow shaft. (b) Determine the minimum diameter of a solid steel shaft for which the maximum
shear stress is the same as in part (a) for the same torque T.
2. The copper pipe shown in Figure has an outside diameter of 3.50 in. and a wall thickness of 0.313
in. The pipe is subjected to a uniformly distributed torque of t = 90 lb-ft/ft along its entire length.
Using a = 2.5 ft, b = 4 ft, and c = 8 ft, calculate:(a) the shear stress at A on the outer surface of the
pipe. (b) the shear stress at B on the outer surface of the pipe.

3. A steel tube having an outer diameter of 2.5 in. is used to transmit 9 hp when turning at 27
rev/min. Determine the inner diameter d of the tube to the nearest 1/8 in. if the allowable shear
stress is allow = 10 ksi.

4. A tubular steel [G = 80 GPa] shaft with an outside diameter of D = 100 mm and a wall thickness
of t = 6 mm must not twist more than 0.05 rad in a 7-m length. Determine the maximum power
that the shaft can transmit at 375 rpm.

5. The rod has a diameter of 1 in. and a weight of 15 lb/ft. Determine the maximum torsional stress
in the rod at a section located at B due to the rods weight.
