Risk
(2) Who might be harmed and how?
(3) What controls exist to reduce
risk
(4) What action can be taken
to further reduce risk?
Water Damage.
Me, my teacher or classmates.
The college have a rule that no
drinks are allowed at the computer
desk. There is a table opposite the
computer desk where drinks can
be kept.
They can be kept on the table
opposite the computer desk.
Tripping over chairs and bags.
Me, my teacher, my classmates or
anyone walking around the room.
Chairs are kept pushed under
tables. Bags are kept under or on
top of the tables.
Eye strain.
Me or my classmates.
Chairs can be stacked up in piles
or kept pushed right under the
table so they are not all spaced
out around the room. Chairs are
kept on top of the table or under
the tables.
We are timetabled a ten minuet
break after every hour and we are
granted a break if needed.
Electrical fires.
Tripping over wires.
Me, my teacher, my classmates or
anyone in the room.
Me, my teacher, my classmates or
anyone in the room.
We are not allowed to have liquid
near the computer.
All of the computer have wire
housing so that the wire isnt
exposed. The wires are tucked
behind the computers so it isnt
possible to trip over them.
We can keep our computer screen
on a low brightness. We can turn
all of the main lights off and use
the natural day light that comes
through the windows.
We can keep bottles of drinks on
the table opposite the computer
desk. We can make sure if the
copter is getting too hot and we
think it might overheat we turn it
off straight away and use a
different one.
We can make sure all of the wires
are neat and tidy so that they cant
become a trip hazard. We can
make sure none of the wires are
touching the floor so we cant trip
on them.
1. List hazards something with the potential to cause harm here:
Seek to quantify the level of risk the likelihood of harm arising based on the number of persons affected, how often they are exposed to the hazard and the
severity of any consequence.
2. List groups of people who are especially at risk from the significant hazards which you have identified
3. List existing controls here or note where the information may be found
4. List the risks which are not adequately controlled and the action you will take. Have regard for the level of risk, the cost of any action and the benefit you expect to
gain.

RISK RATING
a SEVERITY
b LIKELIHOOD
c FINAL SCORE RATING: what needs to be done
Dying or being permanently disabled
Will almost certainly happen
Serious injury/long term illness
Highly likely to happen
Temporary disability/3 days off sick
Not so likely
Will need medical attention
Even less likely
Minor injury eg. Bruise, graze
Unlikely to happen at all
16-25 Stop! Do not start activity again until risk is
controlled
10-15 High risk level, High priority. Take action
straight away to control the risk
6-9
Medium risk level. Tighten up controls and
make a plan to do something about risk
3-5
Fairly low risk level. Low priority but keep
possible action in mind
1-2
Low or trivial risk. No further action
required.
SO: a x b = c
Action Required:
-They can be kept on the table opposite the computer desk.
-Chairs can be stacked up in piles or kept pushed right under the table so they are not
all spaced out around the room.
-We can keep our computer screen on a low brightness. We can turn all of the main
lights off and use the natural day light that comes through the windows.
