Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
Identify the components of a 4L60-E and 4L80-E transmission

Describe hydraulic control devices of the 4L60-E and 4L80-E transmission

Identify powerflow as it relates to the 4L60-E and 4L80-E automatic transmissions

Identification Methods
GM Numeric-Alpha Characters:
4 indicates number of forward gears in transmission

L indicates transmission is longitudinally mounted in a vehicle uses rear wheel drive

60 or 80 indicates series of transmission and relative torque capacity

E indicates transmission has electronic controls

Identification tag may be easiest form of identification


Proper transmission identification is required to ensure correct replacement parts are
installed.

Technician must also be aware of any:

Production modifications

Recall campaign in effect

Possible Technical Service Bulletins issued for transmission

1.000:1 in Third gear

0.696:1 in Fourth gear

2.294:1 in Reverse

4L80-E Include:

2.482:1 in First gear

0.750:1 in Fourth gear

Fluid Capacity:

Bottom pan removed: 5.0 qts (4.7L)

Completely disassembled: 12.1qts (11.5L)

4L80-E :

Bottom pan removed: 7.7 qts (7.3L)

Completely disassembled: 13.5 qts (12.8L)

Important: Dexron III is recommended fluid type for all GM Hydramatic transmissions.
