Civil Engineering Super Elevation Guide

This document provides instructions and standard data values for calculating super elevation (e) for highway curves of any degree (DC) and maximum percentage (emax). It includes regression equations to calculate running speed, side friction factor (fmax), minimum radius, and transition gradient based on design speed. The user enters the design speed and emax, then the document uses the equations to calculate additional values needed to determine the curve geometry, including radius at running speed, actual e if the actual curve is less than or greater than the calculated maximum, and runoff/runout lengths using the transition gradient. It then provides an example calculation of curve element stations.

To us instructions

To use enter the design speed and emax. The running speed and fmax will be calculated
using the regression equations on sheet 2. The radius minimum and radius at the running
speed will be calculated. Enter the actual degree of curve and the eact will be calculated.
The tangent runout and runoff will be calculated using the transition gradient% calculated by
regression show on sheet 2.
The stations of the various points on the transition are calculated on the second page of
sheet 1.
