1. The problem so far
Conducting fool proof examination is an area for every university that needs to be addressed with
utmost diligence. The major problems faced by any university related to examination process are
to prevent question paper leakage, provide tamper proof certificates and plug all loopholes to curb
any malpractices. At an average, two out of ten universities face the serious threat of such
problems. We list below some of the major challenges faced by the universities:
Conducting fool proof examinations: With rapidly increasing user base, the process of
conducting examination by universities has become complicated. An exam has to be conducted at
hundreds of examination centers simultaneously by the university wherein thousands of
candidates appear. Generally these examination centers are distributed over various affiliated
colleges and distance education centers. The question papers have to be transported to the
examination centers one or two days before the actual examination. This poses a risk of question
paper leakage.
Providing tamper proof certificates: Providing authentic and tamper proof certificates is
another challenge faced by the universities. Often we come across the news regarding the fake
certification and the ignominy faced by the university authorities of seeing their certificates being
tampered with by unscrupulous elements. This is where they need the assistance of modern
technological tools.
Examination rescheduling: With increasing complexity of the examination process, the
universities are often faced with the issues related to rescheduling or cancellation of the
examinations. In the manual system, rescheduling or cancellation of examination at selected
centers creates nuisance and may lead to complete breakdown of the system.
Accuracy of evaluation and high turn around time: The existing examination evaluation
system is fraught with high turn around time. Manual re-evaluation procedures are highly
complicated, which could be solved with the aid of modern technological tools.
Geographic limitations of the university: Universities are trying to compete in the global
market by providing best courses to the students. The geographical limitation of the university is
an obstacle. Conducting examination at distantly located study centers is almost impossible in the
existing system.
Managing vast amount of data: With increasing user-base, the universities have to manage
huge data related to students, their academic record, performance record in examinations, mark
sheets etc.

diligently meeting the requirements of a university in conducting online examination. The system
handles the complete life cycle of Examination Management which includes online registration of
candidates, Examination fee management, internal mark uploading, hall ticket generation,
question bank management, question paper generation, automated evaluation process and up to
the reporting of the results.
The system has a simple and easy to use web-based centralized user interface and a well-defined
database-centric schema for storing, retrieving, managing and aggregating examination objects.
IntelliEXAMS has a powerful but easy to use question bank authoring system with different
question types like multiple choices, true or false, fill in the blanks etc. The question banks are
managed online and the questions can contain multimedia contents also. The question papers are
delivered in a highly secured manner with 128-bit encryption technology to provide peace of

2.2 IntelliEXAMS Architecture Overview
The examination management system is a unique solution for the management of examinations
for a university. It includes a range of services that allow the solution to interact with the colleges
associated with the university and also provide the framework for all the university level
functionalities for the effective conduct of examination.
The IntelliEXAMS framework is built as a technology suite and provides the solution to the
clients as Managed Application Service (MAS). It has a web based authoring tool by which the
question papers can be set by subject experts located in different parts of the world, thus giving
the client the convenience of having the best set of question papers in a shortest time possible.
The question paper is set on pre set parameters or templates by randomization process and then
pushed to examination centers in encrypted format. A certain time period before the examination,
the question papers would be decrypted, printed and distributed to the examination centers. The
question paper is first encrypted before being sent to the remote examination centers, from where
the authorized person uses his key to decrypt and then print using high speed printers. Further,
there are hardware based authentications which ensures the whole process is highly secure and
fool proof.
As a part of the IntelliEXAMS framework, there is an examination management process that
encompasses the management of examinations that are online or offline. It takes into account the
attendance and regulations for the course and program and then verifies the fee payments made
before the hall ticket generation can be implemented.
The results processing and publishing can be done using IntelliEXAMS after real time analysis of
the results, moderation and approval.
The system is capable of providing these services in a distributed framework between the
Network Operating Center (NoC) at the university campus and the Examination Data Centers
(EDCs) at the colleges. The system is robust enough to handle large amount of data. Also the
system is equipped with proper back up disaster recovery plan.
The NoC or the Network Operating Center is like the nerve center of the entire system. The
question bank server, the application server, the database server, the backup server reside at the
NoC.
The NoC is connected to the EDC (Examination Data Center) at the various colleges through
VPN. Since only LD server is connected to central server placed at the NoC, it reduces the
bandwidth consumption. The LD centers in colleges can have only 256 KBPS bandwidth internet
line.
The EDC are the extension of the NoC in terms of providing the college input to the university.
The receipt of applications from students including payment of fee, attendance upload, the
internal marks upload and the receipt of question papers, approval of printing of hall tickets for
the students is done at the EDC.

2.3 Deployment Architecture
The proposed solution has a multi layer architecture consisting of modules for mission critical
applications involving the university, CoE, colleges and the students. The distributed web based
authoring allows faculty from any part of the world to contribute to the question bank. The
validation layer in the system enables the CoE and his team to ensure that only questions that
pertain to the subject, modules and syllabi are considered to be placed in the central repository.
Application at the central servers enable the critical applications being processed including
randomization of the questions from the question bank, validating the severity level, repetitive
levels and the templates stores before the question paper is set and delivered to the remote
examination centers. The question then gets encrypted and delivered to the examination centre in
a secured manner. The system follows industry standards encryption technology to ensure
secured delivery of the question papers. Further, hardware authentication of the local servers at
the examination centers is also done by the system so that practically the system deployed is safe
and free of any hacking.
The whole system is managed by industry standards ITSM framework by qualified network
Engineers and ISO 27001:2005 policies are strictly followed for Information Security and BCP.
Surveillance cameras, biometric access system and other physical and electronic security systems
are followed in order to ensure 100% secure data handling and transmission of the question paper.
