System and Automatic Control Lab (EC-218) : Experiment No. 5

The document describes an experiment using MATLAB/Simulink to simulate a DC motor system and draw the characteristic of angular velocity. The experiment involves creating a block diagram model of a DC motor with parameters like moment of inertia, friction constant, electromotive force constant, torque constant, resistance, and inductance. The model is run with a 10V input over 2.5 seconds and the output angular velocity graph is produced. The result and observations from the simulation are then discussed.

Experiment No.65

Object: To simulate a DC motor (Armature control) system and draw the characteristic of the
angular velocity using MATLAB/ simulink.

Apparatus:

S. No. Apparatus/components Quantity Rating /Makes

1 Computer system with 1 ----
MATLAB software

Theory:

A common actuator in control systems is the DC motor. It directly provides rotary motion and,
coupled with wheels or drums and cables, can provide translational motion. The electric
equivalent circuit of the armature and the free-body diagram of the rotor are shown in the
following figure.

For this example, we will assume that the input of the system is the voltage source (V) applied to
the motor's armature, while the output is the rotational speed of the shaft d(theta)/dt. The rotor
and shaft are assumed to be rigid. We further assume a viscous friction model, that is, the friction
torque is proportional to shaft angular velocity.
The physical parameters for our example are-
Moment of inertia of the rotor J= 0.01 kg.m^2

Motor viscous friction constant B=0.1 N.m.s

Electromotive force constant Ka =0.01 V/rad/sec
Motor torque constant Kt=0.01 N.m/Amp
Electric resistance R=1 Ohm
Electric inductance L=0.5 H
