Q.I. (A) Read the following passage and answer the questions that
follow : (10 marks)
A.1. Complete the following. 2
(i) Thermal energy is obtained by _________________________.
(ii) Solar water heaters can save _____________________.
Even as the country's energy security is compromised since it
depends so heavily on oil imports, India has realized that a large part of
its energy security can be achieved by using what it has free of cost
and in abundance all over the country, all around the year and forever
- sunlight.
There are numerous reasons for India to "go solar". Solar energy is
clean energy as it emits no effluents or pollutants into the atmosphere
unlike the thermal energy obtained by the burning of coal or natural
gas. Besides being free, solar energy is forever, unlike fossil fuels,
whose stocks are getting depleted everyday without being replenished
and which we will exhaust completely within a few decades unless
fresh sources are available in India. The irony is that Germany does
not have as many sunny days as India does, yet Germany accounts for
50% of the global market for photovoltaic cells which are used to convert
sun rays into electric energy, while India accounts for only 1 per cent
of the global market. Solar energy is modular and scalable and can be
generated at the point of use, in which case there is negligible or no
loss in transmission and distribution. It is simple and quickly
implementable requiring no or low gestation period. Importantly, there
are no rehabilitation issues related to solar power projects as are seen
in the case of mega power projects. Also, solar power projects require
virtually very little maintenance.
PV modules exposed to the sun can produce enough power to run
the basic appliances in a home. Solar street lights, traffic signals, solar
water pumps and solar lanterns are getting readily accepted. Solar

water heaters can save enough electricity to pay back for their cost in
three to five years.
Like 'universalisation of education' the central government should
make it a national mission to achieve 'universalisation of electrification.'

Healthy Alternatives
A subdued group returned to school with one clear thought in their
minds - they simply had to do something about this situation.
"It's the packaged food that's the main problem," said Dechen. "I
guess it would be ninety percent of our school trash. She turned to
Chogyal. "Don't you think so?"
Chogyl frowned. Well, let us not say exactly ninety percent but may
be approximately that."
"Oh, why are we fussing about figures and percentages?" exclaimed
Tensin. "Let's just figure out how we can reduce trash at ELC."
It was a challenging problem and the students puzzled their head
over it for quite a while. By the end of the day though, they had come
out with some tentative solutions : the school was to be made aware of
3 / MT - 16 Paper - II
the problem; packaged foods, the principal culprit, would be allowed on
campus on only one day of the week, Wednesday; and the students
will be educated about healthy alternatives to packaged foods by focusing
on different food items, like fruits, salads, soups, juices and other
nourishing options on the different days of the week.
"What will you do about the Wednesday plastic waste?" asked their
Principal, Ms Deki Choden, who had dropped in on their brainstorming
session.
"We could reuse it to make meditation mats," offered Dechen Paydon
eagerly. "My aunt makes them - they're really long-lasting. And we
could make other creative things as well."

Back in Dehra, we found an island, a small rocky island in the
middle of a dry riverbed. It was one of those riverbeds, so common in
the Doon valley, which are completely dry in summer but flooded during
4 / MT - 16 Paper - II
the monsoon rains. A small mango tree was growing in the middle of
the island, and Grandfather said, If a mango can grow here, so can
other trees. As soon as the rains set in and while the river could
still be crossed we set out with a number of tamarind, laburnum and
coral-tree saplings and cuttings, and spent the day planting them on
the island. When the monsoon set in, the trees appeared to be
flourishing.
The monsoon season was the time for rambling about. At every
turn there was something new to see. Out of earth and rock and leafless
bough, the magic touch of the monsoon rains had brought life and
greenness. You could almost see the broad-leaved vines grow. Plants
sprang up in the most unlikely places. A peepul would take root in the
ceiling. You would see a mango plant sprouting on the windowsill. We
did not like to remove them: but they had to go, if the gouse was to be
kept from falling down.

(i) The destiny of a nation is built on ___________.
(a) shastras (b) people (c) character
(ii) We must all have ___________.
(a) humility (b) character (c) honesty
5 / MT - 16 Paper - II
Character is destiny. Character is that on which the destiny of a
nation is built. One cannot have a great nation with men of small
character. We must have young men and women who look upon others
as the living image of themselves as our Shastras have so often declared.
But whether in public life or student life, we cannot reach great
heights, if we are lacking in character. We cannot climb the mountain
when the ground at our feet is crumbling. When the very basis of our
structure is shaky how can we reach the heights we have set before
ourselves? We must all have humility. Here is a country which we are
all interested in building up for whatever service we take up, we should
not care for what we receive. We should know how much we can put
into that service. That should be the principle which should animate
our young men and women. Ours is a great country, we have had for
centuries a great history. The whole of the East reflects our culture.
B.2. State whether the following statements are true or false. 2
(i) Destiny of a nation is built on character.
(ii) We can reach great heights even if we are lacking in character.
B.3. (i) That should be the principle which should animate our young 2
men and women. The underlined word means :
(a) discourage (b) encourage (c) frighten (d) humour
(ii) Give the adjective forms of : (a) humility (b) reflection
B.4. Do as directed. 2

(ii) The hare is running races in her mirth.
6 / MT - 16 Paper - II
There was a roaring in the wind all night;
The rain came heavily and fell in floods;
But now the sun is rising calm and bright,
The birds are singing in the distant woods;
Over his own sweet voice the Stock-dove broods;
The Jay makes answer as the Magpie chatters;
And all the air is filled with pleasant noise of waters.
All things that love the sun are out of doors;
The sky rejoices in the morning's birth;
The grass is bright with raindrops - on the moors
The hare is running races in her mirth;
And with her feet she from the plashy earth
Raises a mist; that, glittering in the sun,
Runs with her all the way, wherever she doth run.

But when you'd bring your picture book
And ask me please to share your fun
I'd say: "A little later, son."

Then tip toe softly to the door
I wish I'd stayed a minute more.

Q.IV Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow :
(5 Marks)
A.1. Complete the following. 1
Our dog, Rex, loved fielding because _______________________.
The feeling was particularly strong late one summer evening when
we were playing cricket. It was my turn to field. Our dog, Rex, loved
fielding because it gave him the chance to nose around in the
undergrowth. Neel, the eldest, was batting. Akhil, the youngest, bowled
a cunning googly.
Thapak! Ball and bat made rude contact. The ball soared. Rex barked
and raced after it. We heard him crashing through the bushes. My
brothers went in for a drinks break. And I went after the missing ball
and the absconding fielder. I found the ball all right. It lay clearly
visible at the foot of a gnarled neem. How had Rex missed it? Slightly
puzzled, I picked the ball and called out his name. No sign of him. I
whistled.
This time a faint whine pierced the stillness. This part of the garden
was particularly wild. Thick climbers covered the trees, hanging like
green curtains from their branches. Stepping gingerly onto the wild
hummocky grass, I went after Rex. Suddenly I saw him. Or rather, I
saw his wagging tail. The rest of him was hidden by a Zizyphus bush.
There was someone else behind that bush. Someone to whom Rex
offered a friendly paw. He whimpered again but it was a pleasurable
sound as if that someone was scratching his ears for him.
"Rex!" I shouted, annoyed. "Come here!"
There was a movement in the bushes. I had not exactly a glimpse but
an impression of a boy, disappearing in a quick gliding movement into
the shrubbery. Rex was staring after him with a puzzled look and a
faintly wagging tail.
"Rex!" I called.
This time he came. We returned and narrated the incident to the
others.
"How old was he?" Neel enquired. "What did he look like?"
"About your age."
Neel was fifteen.
"Slim, pale, with curly golden hair."
8 / MT - 16 Paper - II
"Golden hair?"
I nodded uncertainly.
"You are making it up," Neel scoffed. "There is no golden-haired boy
around here."
May be he was right. It must have been a trick of light fired by my
imagination, I decided. Yet, for several days after that, whenever we
played in the garden I would keep a lookout for the mystery boy. He
never appeared.
A.2. Write the sentences in correct sequence : 2
(i) Suddenly I saw him
(ii) This part of the garden was particularly wild
(iii) Rex barked and raced after it
(iv) I picked the ball and called out his name
A.3. Why, do you think, did Rex wag his tail ? 2

Sir,
With reference to your advertisement in 'The Times of India'

I passed my B.com with a first class from Bombay University in
May 1998. I have just completed MBA from a reputed organisation. I
have a good command over English, as I studied at St. Xaviers High
School and Marathi is my mother tongue. I can also speak Hindi and
Gujarati quite well. I have a good aptitude for managing things
skillfully.
I assure you that if I am given the post in your reputed

A newly inaugurated building in Mulund (West) collapsed like a

the morning.
5 / MT - 16 Paper - II
Six people were rushed to the Fortis Hospital nearby and thirteen
people died on the spot. A rescue team and the police were called by
people living in the neighbouring building. When they felt intense
tremors a resident of the neighbouring building was heard saying, "I
thought an earthquake had occurred and thought it was the last
day of my life." However, the people around mustered some courage
and peeped out of their windows and discovered what had happened.
They all tried to help in some way or the other. The rescue team
promptly began its work and rescued many people. Work is still in
progress as it was a huge disaster. The use of substandard and
cheap building material could be the reason for this disaster. The
government has appointed a committee to enquire and present a
report for the same.
This is, these days, a common problem that must be curbed or
else people will never feel secured in their homes.

Student : So what should I do to regain my fitness ?
Coach : I will train you for three hours daily. We will work on your
arms and shoulders in the next hour we will work on
your back and in the last how we will work on your legs.
Student : I am very low on confidence as well.
Coach : Don't panic. You have been a match winner for our team.

Q.VI. (A) A1 or A2. Do any one of the following activities :
A.1 The main quality required for true sportsmanship is putting in 5
ones best into the game. Besides being a skilled player, he or she
should enjoy the game. A true sportsperson plays with a spirit of
competition, not rivalry. He or she should respect the opponent and
even learn a few lessons from him or her. Observing the game of the
6 / MT - 16 Paper - II
opponent can give one an idea of the strategy one has to use in order
to win. If it is a team game, the sportsperson should possess team
spirit. When the sportsperson is victorious, he or she should be
humble about it. In the event of defeat, he or she should accept it
cheerfully. All these qualities are the marks of the true spirit of
sportsmanship that every sportsperson should display.

Q.VI. (B) B1 or B2. Do any one of the following activities :
B.1 Although I have the deepest respect for the elderly and cherish 5
their loving presence, I wouldnt really describe them as torch
bearers. On the contrary, I would call them flickering flames. Though
during their time they have faced odds and carved pathways around
obstacles, you will have to agree that the present is not the past.
Things change rapidly. The elderly, however, are not very much in
tune with the present. They are unable to cope with the changing
world. Besides, they are conservative, stubborn and reluctant to try
out new ideas. They usually insist on imposing their own ideas upon
others, which may be outdated. In this sense, very often, they obstruct
progress.
On the other hand, you cannot deny that it is the youth who are
the real path-breakers. Being in the flow and stream of affairs, they
are fully conversant with present difficulties and the possible solutions.
They take initiative and are always on the path of innovation. They
have the vigour necessary to launch movements and pioneer new
pathways to progress. Hence, it naturally follows and they are the
ones who can and should lead the way and show the way to others.
For all these reasons, I firmly believe that it is the youth and not the
elderly who are the real torch bearers of the nation.

B.2 Respected Principal, Teachers and my dear friends, 5
Good Morning to one and all. Friends we all know the importance
of the teacher in our life. A teacher is the person who educates us,
nurtures us, moulds us and also brings discipline in our life which is
very important. It is 'World Environment Day' today and somehow I
feel even nature, in many ways is like a teacher. If we turn to nature
for guidance we will definitely be guided. But nature has a very
unique way of bringing discipline in our lives. Changes in seasons
and transition of day and night, everything happnes systematically.
In fact she even warns us about disasters in her own way for e.g.
before any natural calamity we get signals like birds leaving such
places well in advance and strange restlessness found in animals at
such times. If one learns to see it, we can learn lot of from it. Thus,
truly nature can be our greatest teacher.
Thank you.
