It identifies four key issues for ELL - demands on content teachers, academic and language prerequisites, need for differentiated instruction, and challenges integrating students' native languages. Technology can help address these issues through additional practice opportunities, multimedia content, translation tools, and resources in students' native languages. The document also discusses challenges for FL learners around authentic materials, audience/purpose, and instruction strategies. It provides examples of how virtual collaboration, trips, and teletandem experiences along with practice and presentation aids can help address these challenges through technology integration.

Teaching and learning with

Technology for foreign and second

languages
Chapter 10
Claudia Bravo
Teachers face a huge challenge today with our
growing, diverse population. Children are brought
into schools with little to no English acquisition and
it is the job of the teacher to teach these students a
whole new language.
There are two forms of language
learning:
1. Second language learning (ELL)

2. Foreign language learning (FL)

English Language learners (ELL)
Previously ESL or English as a second
language
Students whose second language is
English
Are in an English
speaking environment
Foreign Language Learners (FL)
These are students who are studying
another language
The language is spoken mainly in
other countries.
Example: Spanish
There are many differences in
teaching ELL and FL:
