Observation Task 4

Activity One: Observing Classroom Routines and Procedures

Though there are many routines and procedures all over the school such as
returning from assembly or walking in the hallways, this task focuses on what
happens inside of your classroom only.
During the first week of your teaching practice observe your MST and her/his
classroom. Make a note of five (5) routines that you see her/him use every day
inside of the classroom. Fill in the table below to describe EACH routine; when
and where it is used; and what is the aim of the routine or the student behavior
that it hopes to achieve.

Activity Two: Planning for/Developing Routines and

Procedures
Plan the routines for one of your classes. The activity expects that you will
teach the class. It may be a class that you teach for observation by your
MST/MCT or just a practice class that you teach with the permission of your
MST. The lesson can be incorporated as one of your formal observations if
your MST/MCT decides. To complete the activity, you are required (whether
the lesson is one of your formal observations or not) to fill in and submit the
planning sheet below.
Talk about class and routines
In my classroom, the students had free time because the teacher was
busy preparing for the assessment period, so she gave me time to the
students and told me that I could do whatever I like to teach them. So I
thought about making them an attendance routine, paying attention routine
and helping hand routine. I started with the attendance. I created cards for
the students and then I gave each student his card. I told them that they
need to stick their cards on the board when they come to the classroom in
the morning. I modeled it in front of them, and then I let the students do it.
After that, I gave them a lesson about the letter g. I had the students working
in groups on different activities to match their levels. They had to work
together, help each other and use the materials together. When I wanted to
grab their attention I put my hands on my head. The students kept looking at
me because it is something that is not ordinary and they want to know what
do I mean with what I am doing. I told them that when I put my hands over
my head, it means that I need the students to stop what they are doing and
look at me.
After finishing the activities time I let the students clean up the centers,
and we sing the cleanup song, and then I let them sit back in their places.
We revised the lesson, and then I picked two students, one girl and one boy
and I told them that these are the helping hands. The helping hand is the
student that would help me if I needed help like, for example, he would lead
the line when we go to the bathroom or playground. And then I let the girl
lead the girl's line, and the boy leads the boy's line when we went to the
bathroom. We practiced the helping hand routine until the students went to
the bus.

After the Task - Reflection

Choose three best practices you observed during your time in school. Reflect
on these and consider why you could implement these in a UAE KG
classroom in the future. Explain how these practices will affect student
learning in a KG class.

Three of the best practices I observed during my time in the school were the
classroom rules, the teachers attentions signal and submitting the homework. I
would implement these in my classroom in the future because, in the beginning,
rules make everything easier. When you agree on the rules with your students, it
shows them what they need to do and what they dont need to do. It would make an
effortless so you dont need to warn them every time they misbehave. You have
your rules, and the rules have consequences so the students would behave. The

second thing that I would like to implement is the teachers attention signal when
she says class class class. This signal makes the teacher know who is listening and
who is not. It makes all of the students involved with the teacher, and they all need
to leave what they are doing and look at her. It wont take too long time, so that
wont waste the teachers time or make her put so much effort in it. It is a very easy
strategy, and it is useful. The last strategy I would like to implement is submitting
homework. Students submit their homework by themselves. It makes an effortless
on the teacher, and it gives the students the responsibility of submitting their
homework and doing something for their benefit. It teaches them organization, time
management and it makes them feel responsible.
