Character Profile
Category #1: The Basics
Name: Nathan Howard
Sex: Male
Gender: Very masculine. Enjoys stereotypically masculine things.
Age: 18
Birthday: 15th June 1998
Star Sign: Gemini
Race, ethnicity, culture: White, British. However, he has a Russian heritage on his Dads
side (his Dad is 50% Russian) which he doesnt really have much of a link with as he
doesnt know his Russian grandparents/relatives. However, his Mum is fully Scottish and
his Grandparents on his Mums side lived in Scotland until they both passed away.
Height: 63
Body Type: Athletic. Muscly and broad build.
Celebrity Look-A-Like: Robert Sheehan
Appearance: Curly brown hair, hazel eyes. Semi-prominent nose and small mouth. His
skin tone is pale.
Fashion: Nathans fashion sense is just casual. He doesnt tend to dress up that much. He
enjoys wearing sports wear and lounge wear the most. However, if he is dressing up, he
will normally reach for something flamboyant but still masculine. His favourite formal wear
is a pair of floral print black and white trousers, a white shirt and a grey trench coat.
Where is he from? Where does he live? Nathan was born in Keswick and his lived there
the majority of his life. He did live in Scotland for a short space of time with his Mums
Mother (Aileen) so his parents could care for her as she wall sick. She unfortunately
passed away when Nathan was around 13 and the family moved back to Cumbria.
Category #2: Relationships:
Family: Nathan lives with both his biological parents. His Dad is called William Howard
and his Mum is called Juliet or Julie Howard (formerly Penning). William works as a
personal trainer at the local gym and Julie works as a spinning class instructor at the same
gym her husband works at. The gym both parents work at is owned by a family friend of
theirs.
William and Julie have lived in Cumbria their entire lives. However, his Dads Dad moved
to Cumbria from Russia years ago and met Nathans Grandmother on his Dads side.
Nathan doesnt have much of a connection with his Russian relatives as they moved back
to Russia years ago. However, Nathan was very close with his Grandmother, Aileen (on
his Mums side) and she was the first one to guess that Nathan was gay but she didnt
reveal it to anyone due to Nathans dads insistence on Nathan being as macho as can be
and on Julies massive want to have grandchildren.
Nathans parents met in the local gym (suprise surprise). They just met when they were
working on machines next to each other.
Nathans parents are not necessarily homophobic. However, they are the kind of people
who will say We dont have a problem with it as long as we dont have to see it.. This
outs off Nathan from coming out as he is sure of sexuality and is comfortable within
himself. However, he hasnt even come out to his friends yet, only Aileen (well she guess
that he was gay, but sill). In the end of the book, Nathan comes out but not to Becca (as
you would expect since they are the closest) but to Natalie (who is is also gay) and then to
the rest of the group along with Natalie (THIS IS A MAJOR PLOT POINT).
Friends: Nathans friendship group consists of Teagan, Danny, Natalie and Becca.
Nathan met Teagan, Danny and Becca in primary school and then met Natalie in the
second year of secondary school when she was introduced to the group by Teagan.
Out of his friendship group, Nathan is the closest to Becca and Danny. Being the only two
guys in the group, Nathan and Danny inevitably became good friends. However, Nathan is
closest with Becca really, due to the fact they have quite a bit in common. They both enjoy
watching sports on TV, especially basketball (which is Nathans sport). Becca and Nathan
consider themselves bros and are the best of friends. They are very alike in their loud and
extroverted personalities and they are not afraid to be noticed or of standing out.
Out of the group, Nathan isnt as close to Natalie. The reason being, his and Natalies
personalities are very different and therefore, they dont tend to be as close as others.
However, this changes in the end of the book when Natalie and Nathan come out to each
other. there is not much mention of Nathans homosexuality throughout the book. This is
more of a plot twist towards the end of the story.
Category #3: The Sexy Stuff:
Sexual Orientation: Homosexual (closeted)
What is he attracted to? Nathan is attracted to guys who are a lot like him. He likes
athletic guys. However, he is open to falling for anyone. He likes guys with facial hair.
Nathan doesnt really mind what hair or eye colour his partner has. He wants someone
who has common interests with him (e.g. sports, etc.) but he also wants someone who has
different interests to him and will introduce him to new things. He wants someone with a
crude sense of humour like him and someone who is a bit of a comedian and tells some
really bad jokes and puns because as much as he hates to admit it, Nathan really enjoys
corny jokes and puns.
Sexual Experience: He has had sex with a girl before but that was when he was 16 and
before he realised his sexuality. He is no longer in contact with this girl as they split up
after the girl discovered Nathans sexuality through his internet history.
Romantic Experience: He has had one girlfriend before.
Category #4: Skills:
Skills: Nathan is an aspiring athlete. He has been training to become a basketball player
since he was young and hopes to do it professionally one day. Nathan does have some
academic intelligence though. Nathan is very into biology and the physical therapy side of
sports and would like to maybe try becoming a physical therapist should he not become a
basketball player. Nathan has a good knowledge of biology and how the body works and
he did very well in science in school.
Occupation/Schooling: Nathan doesnt have any type of paid job. He does help around
the gym both his parents work at sometimes but other than that, he doesnt work. He is
currently studying sports at (FE) college and wants to continue on to become a
international basketball player. He isnt really aiming to go to university.
Hobbies: Outside of playing sports, Nathan enjoys watching sports on TV. He watches all
different kinds of sports: basketball (obviously), football, rugby and he also watches the
Olympics every time they take place. Nathan also enjoys watching science documentaries
and psychological documentaries. He likes Derren Browns TV shows in particular. He is
also a fan of Louis Theroux. Apart from watching TV, Nathan also likes to read. He actually
likes to read non-fiction books and self-help books the most. He thinks the self-help books
will help him with his issues.
Category #5: Personality & Character:
Introvert or Extrovert? A mix. Nathan can appear very extroverted but also values his
time alone. He is more on the extroverted side though.
Right-brained or left-brained? A mix. Nathan tends to use logical thinking a lot but he
also likes to think creatively. It really depends on his mood and situation as to how he
decides to solve problems.
Strengths: Nathan is a very compassionate guy. He treats everyone with respect despite
his joking nature. Nathan is also very physically strong and is a very talented basketball
player. He knows all of the techniques and is very focussed when hes in a game. Nathan
is a lot smarter than he seems.
Weaknesses: Nathan, like Natalie is very secretive and reserved and isnt very open. He
tends to keep his emotions bottled up inside and he never actually lets them out. He
doesnt rant to anyone, he tends to be the one who is getting ranted to. He instead takes
out his anger and upset out on a punching bag in the gym.
Goals, dreams, aspirations: Nathan dreams of becoming a professional basketball
player and he wants to succeed in his career. However, Nathan also (kind of secretly)
really wants to have a family when he is grown up and he wants to adopt kids with his
future partner and give them a great quality of life with his earnings (hopefully) from
basketball.
Beliefs/affiliations: Atheist. Nathan doesnt really think about religion or spirituality.
Beliefs outside of religion: Nathan believes in equality in all senses. He believes in
equality for women, youth, seniors, the LGBT+ community, etc. Equality is Nathans main
belief outside of religion (despite the fact he has no religion).
Fears: Disappointing his family. He is scared that he will disappoint them by being gay and
by not living up to his full potential in the sports world. He wants nothing more than to
make his family proud and wants to honour his Grandmothers memory by achieving as
much success in his life as possible.
Insecurities: His sexuality and his lack of masculinity. Nathan isnt that masculine
personality wise. Also, Nathan meeting an attractive boy by chance doesnt help his urge
to hide his homosexuality. He is often teased by his Dad (unknowingly to his Dad) about
being so girly. Nathan tries his best to be masculine but he just isnt like that. His friends
accept him for how he is but his parents, mainly his Dad do tease him a bit. They say hes
so girly because he spent a lot of time with his Grandmother.
What would he die for? His family, friends and equality/his beliefs.
