Anologue Coding

The student analyzed the abstract painting "White Centre (Yellow, Pink and Lavender on Rose)" by Mark Rothko and attempted to recreate it by writing instructions, as inspired by Sol LeWitt's conceptual approach to art. The student broke down the painting's layers of color and dimensions, and wrote instructions that aimed to simplify the process while allowing for interpretation. The initial attempt was not successful, so the student made the instructions more specific about color placement. This process of "analogue coding" achieved the conceptual idea of translating the physical work into instructions, in a style similar to LeWitt.

Analogue Coding

My approach to this task began in researching in the abstractions of art and i found myself
looking in to a man noted it the previous lectures, named Sol Lewwit as he is a prime ex-
ample for this task as he believed that the art itself lied in its idea, like an architect who in-
structs the steps to create a beautiful structure. (Michael Zurakhinsky, 2017) Then began
searching for a piece and it was interesting trying to imagine what instructions would cre-
ate the aesthetic of various subjects, but i found my self finding something a bit simplistic
and would be more suited for the class, the piece is called White Centre (Yellow, Pink and
Lavender on Rose) I found this piece related to Sols similar process as he mainly uses
instructions using various lines, basic colours and simply shapes in a majority of he's art
(Michael Zurakhinsky, 2009)
.

White Center, 1950 by Mark Rothko (on right side of page)

I began the by breaking the painting down into the original way it
was originally constructed, which was basically layers of colours in
different dimensions of the paper, I also had to take in that you
would have to let the paint dry or else youd end up with the colours
smudging ultimately loosing the aesthetic of the art work. Ive have
tried to simplify the instructions as i was leaving room for human in-
terpretation as does Sol, Once ive written the instructions i began to
follow them and the outcome wasn't ideal, then I came to realise that
i had to be more specific with the colours as i believe thats were the
true aesthetic concept as well as the materials used for the piece e.g
(Paint, Brushes and Paper) After altering the instructions i believe
that i have potentially created the idea of the original piece by speci-
fying colours and their placements on the paper and ive done this in a similar way to Sol
Lewwits style of abstracting the physical final product into instructions, obtaining the ability
of analogue coding.
