How To Troubleshoot Compressor Issues

This document provides troubleshooting steps for common compressor issues including: 1. The compressor will not run due to possible causes like an open main switch, blown fuse, or tripped thermal overloads. Corrective steps include closing switches, checking circuits, and allowing overloads to automatically reset. 2. A noisy or vibrating compressor could be due to issues like liquid slugging, improper piping supports, or a worn compressor that require repairs or replacement. 3. High or low discharge pressure issues may involve problems like non-condensable gases, improper condenser cooling, overcharging or undercharging that can be addressed by cleaning coils, adjusting controls or adding/removing refrigerant.

How to troubleshoot compressor issues

Problem Possible Causes Possible Corrective Steps

1. Main Switch Open 1. Close Switch
2. Fuse Blown 2. Check electrical circuits and motor winding for shorts to
ground. Investigate for possible overloading. Replace fuse
after fault is corrected.
3. Thermal Overloads tripped 3. Overloads are automatically reset. Check unit closely
when unit come back on line.
4. Defective contactor/ coil 4. Repair/ Replace
5. LL solenoid will not open 5. Repair/ replace LL Coil
Compressor 6. Motor electrical trouble 6. Check motor for open winding, short circuits, or burnout
Will not 7. Loose Wiring 7. Check all wire junctions. Tighten all terminals screws.
Run 8. Trouble in starting switch or 8. Close switch manually to test power
control circuit
9. Loose Wiring 9. Check all wire junctions tighten all terminal screws.
10. Trouble in starting switch or 10. Close switch manually to test power supply. If OK check
control circuit. control circuit including temperature and pressure
controls.
