How to troubleshoot compressor issues
Problem Possible Causes Possible Corrective Steps
1. Main Switch Open 1. Close Switch
2. Fuse Blown 2. Check electrical circuits and motor winding for shorts to
ground. Investigate for possible overloading. Replace fuse
after fault is corrected.
3. Thermal Overloads tripped 3. Overloads are automatically reset. Check unit closely
when unit come back on line.
4. Defective contactor/ coil 4. Repair/ Replace
5. LL solenoid will not open 5. Repair/ replace LL Coil
Compressor 6. Motor electrical trouble 6. Check motor for open winding, short circuits, or burnout
Will not 7. Loose Wiring 7. Check all wire junctions. Tighten all terminals screws.
Run 8. Trouble in starting switch or 8. Close switch manually to test power
control circuit
9. Loose Wiring 9. Check all wire junctions tighten all terminal screws.
10. Trouble in starting switch or 10. Close switch manually to test power supply. If OK check
control circuit. control circuit including temperature and pressure
controls.
11. Seized compressor 11. Repair/ Replace
Compressor Check for Liquid or slugging Check expansion valve(s) check oil levels.
Noisy/ Improper piping supports Relocated, add/remove hangers
Vibrating Worn Compressor Repair/ replace
1. Air or non-condensable gas in Remove non-condensable
system.
2. Insufficient cooling of air-cooled Check fan operation cleanliness of condenser, and for
condenser adequate source of air flow.
3. System overcharge / too much Remove excess
liquid in receiver.
High
4. Discharge service valve partially Open Valve
Discharge closed
Pressure 5. Fan not running Check electrical circuit
6. Head pressure control setting Adjust
7. Dirty Condenser Coil Clean
8. Insufficient water flow / failed Increase gpm/ repair/ replace
pump
9. Inlet water warm Adjust/fix/ repair
10. Fouled HX Clean/flush, replace
11. Actuator/3-Way valve failed Repair/replace
1. Faulty condenser temperature Check condenser control operation.
regulation.
Low 2. Insufficient refrigerant in the Check for leaks, repair, add charge
Discharge system
Pressure 3. Low suction pressure See corrective steps for low suction pressure
4. Variable head pressure valve Check valve setting
5. Hot gas bypass operation Check operation
High Suction Excessive Load Reduce load or add additional equipment
Pressure Expan valve overfeeding Check TEV bulb, regulate SH
Insufficient refrigerant in Check for refrigerant storage
system
Expansion valve power element Replace expansion valve power element.
dead, malfunctioning, or weak.
Low refrigerant charge Locate and repair leaks charge refrigerant
Low Suction
Improper adjustment of Adjust valve to give more flow
Pressure
expansion valve
Condensing temperature too Check for regulating condensing temperature
low
Clogged section line Clean
Clogged LL filter drier Remove / Replace
Low refrigerant charge Leak check and add if necessary
Compressor No Load To prevent short cycling, if objectionable, need to add
Short Cycles false load
Unit is too large for load Reduce compressor speed install false load system
Compressor Shortage of refrigerant. Repair leak and recharge system
Runs Leaking discharge valves Replace discharge valves
Continuously
