Control Systems for Engineers

This document provides tutorial questions to help determine control objectives, manipulation variables, and disturbance variables for different process control systems. It asks the reader to analyze two processes shown in figures and determine these factors for each. It also asks the reader to sketch a process and instrumentation diagram for an automatic temperature control system for a shower and identify the measurement, decision, and action devices. Finally, it prompts the reader to draw process and instrumentation diagrams based on ISA standards.

Tutorial 1

1. Answer the following question:

TT

i) Determine the control objective for the process

ii) Determine the manipulation variable in this system
iii) Determine the disturbance variables

2. Answer the following question:

Process inlet

LT LC

Process
outlet

Figure 2

i) Determine the control objective for the process

ii) Determine the manipulation variable in this system
iii) Determine the disturbance variables
3. Sketch the process and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) for an automatic control system to
control the temperature of the water from a common shower, that is a system that will
automatically do what you do when you adjust the temperature of the water when you take a
shower. Identify the measurement (M), decision (D) and action (A) devices of your control system.

4. Draw appropriate P&ID in the respective boxes based on ISA-5.1(1984).
