b: Instructional Steps:
Day1: Sing song, play video, power point
1.Today we are going to learn about the letters of the alphabet-Why do we need the letters of the alphabet?
Turn and Talk, share
2. We are also going to learn about an artist today-Who can be an artist? What is art? Turn and Talk (ELL strat)
3. Jasper Johns Power point, discuss the power point
Day 2: Use power point while writing letters, explain art terms to students with power point or while doing the
project- for example we are now using our paper as potrait, this is how you use pastels, paint, etc.
4. Write the first 12 letters of the alphabet in pencil- on construction paper-putting one letter only the capital letter
in each square-, go over the letters with a pastel ( this shows up better than crayon and works for the art stand)
Note: The teacher will probably need to model how to write the letter using a white board, students may need
scaffolding or assistance of writing letters
Day 3: Write the rest of the letters of the alphabet using pencil and then pastel putting one letter in each square
depending on the paper there may be more than one letter in a square or some squares left over
Day 4: Explain primary and secondary colors, how to use paint-Note: If you are not using water colors you will
need to put the paint with some water and put some paint inside egg containers for students-this makes traveling
with paint easy-this way the pastel shows up over the paint if it is watered down a little, students can be
creative and use different colors to go over the letters, have students sign work when finished with a pen
Variations of this project:
Have students do this with numbers 1-10, students can use words (sight words or adjectives)
or the letters of their name, students can also do just the letters they have learned for the art project
Do another project inspired by author such as-target, flag, map or regular object seen in life
d: Summative Assessment:
Completed art project, have students say the letters and the sounds, share your artwork with partner
e: Closing: Ideas to present/display student learning:
How do you feel about our project? Did you like this Art gallery
lesson? Ticket out the door, 3 loves and a wish
Next we will learn how letters make words
