TABLE OF CONTENTS: SRDF/STAR FOR OPEN SYSTEMS ................................................................................................................................... 5
Purpose: In this lab exercise students explore the configuration of their SRDF/Star lab
setup using the EMC Solutions Enabler Command Line Interface (SYMCLI).
2. Some steps involve the license database and options files on your host. Please do not modify any of
these files. If a modification is needed consult the instructor
Step Action
After logging into a host using your group username (e.g. sun1) and password, give yourself
super user privileges by typing:
# su
Type in the shell (user interface you are familiar with) of your choice. Choose one from ksh, sh,
csh, tcsh and bash. Not every shell is available on each host.
Example:
# tcsh
Verify if the SYMCLI executables directory is in your path. If not, use the following commands to
include the directory
# echo $PATH
# export PATH
host1# symcli Which Sol. Enabler version is installed on this host _______
Circle the name of your lab group from the following list:
Volume numbers for your group on Symm1 for EDP <Edev1>____ <Edev2> ____
Volume numbers for your group on Symm1 for Star <dev1>____ <dev2> ____
5 Check if the GNS daemon is configured to run on host 1. Default value is DISABLE. Notice if the
# sign in front of ENABLE has been removed
6 Using the commands below, display information about each site from host 1
Confirm that you see three Symmetrix arrays. Write down the 12 digit IDs of:
Issue the command below from host 1 to get the Enginuity version for each of the three Symmetrix
arrays - symmid refers to the smallest fragment of the Symmetrix ID that makes it uniquely
identifiable
(where symmid refers to the smallest fragment of the Symmetrix ID that makes it uniquely
identifiable)
Is RDF Data Mobility Configuration State enabled *Y/N+ ? ____ ______ _____
9 Identify the name for the CG (edpcg) that will be used for the EDP exercises. From the list below
circle the name of the CG depending on your lab group
10 Using the information from step 2 list the configurations of the devices <Edev1> and <Edev2> at
each of the three Symmetrix sites
What is the device config (RDF1 + Mir / RDF2 + Mir / RDF21 + Mir / RDF21 + DLDEV)
________________
The list commands described below will list devices that have dual personalities at the local site
(such as an R11, R21 or R22) or are connected to an RDF device with dual personalities. The devices
for the EDP labs should only have dual personalities at the intermediate site, i.e. at Symm2.
Example:
In the output below device 40 is an R1 device at the local site that is connected to a device with a
dual personality at the other end. Device 79 has a dual personality in Symmetrix 80

Purpose: In this lab exercise students create a transient fault on the synchronous link
and recover
All commands are issued from the Workload site host, host1
Step Action
Observe the shortened query output that indicates the System state
3 Fail connections to the synchronous target
CAUTION: If you do not include the rdfg parameter you will suspend BOTH links. That will not be
optimal for successful completion of this lab
Example
4 In the window where the query is running notice changes to the System state and STAR
information while the suspend is occurring. Wait until
a) The system state shows the first target as PathFail
System State:
{
1st_Target_Site : PathFail
2nd_Target_Site : Protected
STAR : Tripped
Mode of Operation : Concurrent
}
b) Under STAR information you see
STAR Information:

Was there a time lag between the PathFail and Asynchronous site Data becoming most current
[Y/N] ________
If yes why _____________________________________________________
Example:
Purpose: In this lab exercise students simulate a workload site disaster by failing both
SRDF links from the Workload site, then recovering from the disaster.
1. Commands leading up to the failure are issued from the Workload site host, host1
2. Commands after that are issued from the Synchronous target host, host2
Step Action

STAR : Tripped
Mode of Operation : Concurrent
}
It is possible for the 2nd target site to be in PathFail;CleanReq state instead of PathFail
4 Log into host2. This site will become the new Workload site.
Cleanup Asynchronous Target if 2nd Target Site in Previous step shows PathFail;CleanReq
Example:
host2# symstar cg ibm1star cleanup site ibm1starC nop
Note: This is where BCV gold copies would have been taken if BCVs were present

the Protected or Connected state.
What is the RDF pair state of the 1st (synchronous) target ___________
What is the RDF pair state of the 2nd (asynchronous) target ___________
5 Examine the Star mode on the RDF groups pertaining to your Star triangle. The Star mode flag is
listed in the 4th position under LPDS. The letter under the S column (N or R or .) represents the
Star mode
Fill in the information for the Star modes of the RDF groups for your Star composite group

Synchronous RDF group connecting Symm1 & Symm2 [N/R/.] ____
7 Identify the Star related information in the device details of the source volumes
Note down the following values for the two devices: <dev1 > <dev2>
Have values changed since you examined them in Lab 3 Part 2 (Step 14)[Y/N] ___
Example:
11 Assign name to the synchronous group (Refer to Lab 1 Part 1 Step 13)
Example:
A recovery RDF group is an existing RDF group that connects Symm1 to Symm3
Since the source devices do not connect to R22 devices on Symm3, a recovery RDFG name is
needed in case a link has to be established between Symm1 and Symm3.
In your lab setup the recovery group number should be the RDF group that is 30 higher than the
synchronous RDFG
Example:
Example:
Verify that the information shown in the output matches the values entered in the two previous
steps. Below is an example:
..
1) RDF (RA) Group Number : 20 (13)
Remote Symmetrix ID : 000194900927
Microcode Version : 5875
Recovery RA Group : 50 (31)
RA Group Name : sun1starB
..
13 Run setup. This time the opmode parameter is excluded, since R22 devices are not involved
Note: If you planned on continuing to use this Star configuration, you would log into host2 and
host3, delete the old CGs and run buildcg to get the new CG definitions
Step Action
2 Confirm that the Star bit is not set for any of your RDF groups
