COMS 1010 - Communication Skills

SECTION A

Answer any THREE(3) questions. Answers must be brief and concise.


You are advised to spend not more than 30 minutes on this section

1. List and explain four different sources of noise that impede communication.

2. (i) What is Speech Communication?

(ii) Name 3 types of speeches that are generally identified.

(5 marks)

3. (a) Briefly explain the impromptu and the manuscript modes of speech delivery.

(b) Give an example of when each mode would be necessary.

(5 marks)

4. (a) What is the importance of referencing in academic work?

(b) Correct the referencing below as made by a student in an assignment, using the
Harvard system:

(c) Why should the use of quotations be limited?

5. Briefly explain the advantages and disadvantages of using visual aids.

Answer any ONE(1) question. Use the appropriate format in presenting your answer. You
should not sign the letter with your real name.
You are advised to spend not more than 40 minutes on this section

6. Your neighbours consist of a young married couple with one underage child. Almost
every Saturday night, the couple's relation turns sour and usually ends up with blows
directed towards the lady. Write a letter outlining this situation to the competent
authorities.
(The body of your letter should not exceed 250 words)

7. To celebrate Christmas, "Ala nou vini", a non-governmental organization, will be


organizing a party for the poor children in the locality. For the party to be a success, the
NGO needs to find sponsorship for toys, food, drinks, sound system, etc. As the Secretary
of the NGO, write a letter to the municipal/village/district council of your locality asking
for sponsorship for the occasion. You may include key elements such as the date on
which the party will be held, the number of children that will be present, the itemls you
are expecting the council to provide, etc.
(The body of your letter should not exceed 250 words).

your product? (4 marks)

9. You have been selected by the Ministry of Education to make a presentation on the
increase in violence among youngsters in secondary institutions in Mauritius and the
possible solutions to counter this problem.
