Progress Tests Instructions The Progress Tests (p200-p223) are designed to be used after students have completed each unit of the Students Book. Each Progress Test checks students’ knowledge ofthe key language areas taught in the unit. Some exercises and questions may also test students’ knowledge of language taught in previous ‘units, Is helpful for students to have done the Review section atthe end ofeach unit before doing a Progress Test. You can aso encourage students 1 revise forthe test by reviewing the relevant Language Summary in the back ofthe Student’ Book and by doing exercises for that unit on the CD-ROM and in the Workbook. Note that Progress Test 6 also reviews items from units 1-5, and Progress Test 12 reviews items from the whole ofthe Student’ Book «# Allow students 40 minutes for Progress Tests 1-5 and 11, and 50 minutes for Progress Tests 6 and 12. You may wish to adjust this time depending on your class ch student, Students should do the tests on their own. You can either check the answers with the whole class atthe end of the test or collect in the tests and correct them yourself. Keep a reeord ofthe test scores to help you monitor individual student’, progress and for report writing atthe end of the course ‘Progress Tests can also be given as homework Listening tests There isa listening section in Progress Tests 6 and 12 only. The corresponding recording scripts (R6.10 and RI2.8) are in the Answer Key for the ress, Both R6.10 and R128 have wo separate sections. Focus on one section ofthe recording at a time, Allow students time to read through the questions for that section in the Progress Test before you start. Play that section of the recording without stopping and allow students ‘ answer the questions. Then play the recording again without stopping, Repeat this procedure for the other section. ‘= Photocopy one test for Answer Key and Recording Scripts ) Progress Test 1 p200 1 2visit 3 tidy up 4have 5 go 6 have 7chat 8 do 9 g0 1ohave 11 meet 2 (2 marks each) 2 How long has Eve lived/been living inher lat? 3 What is Nick watching at the moment? 4 What happened when you got home lastnight? That dint really attract me though = the language was too old-fashioned, 1 suppose. Then ‘one of my friends was ina local play and we all went along to watch. That was when I started thinking it right be something I could do too. 1 Did you enjoy drama school? € Loved it. Some of the teachers were very well-known, actors and we were alla bit frightened of them! The ‘most useful thing was being able to go and see all the new plays in London — we often got fre tickets and | learned so much that way. The other students were great too and I made a lot of good friends there. 1 What was your frst acting job? Well, after drama school I worked part-time ina restaurant called The Rendezvous, you know, like actors do. Then I auditioned fora part in a play called Seere Lives, but didn get that, sadly. Then Twas chosen to play a waiter in Table for Two, you know the John Frank rascal 1 Youalways sy your first love is the theatre. Why is that? © Alot of actors say isthe contact with a live audience, and that is exciting of eourse, But the thing I find most, fascinating is that you're part of something that grows and changes ~ a play is never the same two nights in row: Some people lke playing their part in the same way every night, but Pd get rather fed up with that 1 Finally any plans for the future? ‘¢ Well, I was offered a part in a new American detective film, but I didnt want to be away from home for that Jong, Then there’ a new play directed by Tan Scott, but that would mean going on tour. So Tm going to do a ‘TV serial, set near here ~ less travelling! 1 Colin, thank you for talking 10 us € Thank you mane You're looking very well, Paul, have you had a holiday? mau No, but Eve just come back from a health retreat. Lived on just fruit and vegetable juice for a week. Wow! Didnt you feel hungry? Actually it wasnit too bad. Um, on Day 1, things were OK. There was alot to do so I didnt notice I was hungry [felt alot worse the next day — bad headache and so on. After that it was great, though. So would you recommend going to a place like that? Oh yes, defintely. Some people do it regularty, every six months or so and, er, Tm thinking of doing it again in March, Anyway, you always look healthy. What are your tips? Well number one ~ donit miss breakfast I the most, {important meal of the day. always have fruit. yogurt, that kind of thing tend to have a cooked breakfast — you know, egg, beans, toast, smsages and then I can work without stopping until lunchtime. ‘Wow, thatSa lot. I hope you think about the quality of your food. | always buy organic eggs, vegetables and bread. know they're more expensive, but I fel you get what you pay for Are you a vegetarian? ‘Well, when | was younger, I thought it was the right thing to do, both for my health and to protect animals But now I eat a bit of everything — meat and fish included. ‘Mm. So what sort of food do you prefer if you're eating out? It depends what 'm doing and who Tim with. I love spicy food, so Indian or Thai are always good choices, They/re delicious, but a bit too hot for me. If have the choice 1 go to my favourite restaurant just round the ‘corner from my flat which serves great pasta — and its ‘quite cheap too. Sounds good to me!
