Math Concepts for Students

The document discusses different mathematical concepts involving exponents, scientific notation, fractions, and division of fractions. It provides examples of how to work with exponents when multiplying the same number, uses of powers of 10, and how scientific notation expresses very large and small numbers. Fractions are discussed in terms of addition, subtraction, and division. Division of fractions is explained as multiplying the number by the reciprocal of the divisor fraction.

 A number in exponential form has a
base and an exponent. The base is
the repeated factors. The exponent
tells the number of times the base is
to be multiplied by itself.
 A non-zero number with a zero
exponent is equal to 1
 Any number raised to the exponent 1
is equal to the number itself.
 The number of zero’s formed the
digit 1 in a pour of commands
 Exponents are also useful when
using power of 10. Numerical
expressions such as 100,101, 102
and so on are also called power of
10

Example:

10x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 105
There are 5 zeros in 100 000 so 10 is
multiplied by itself 5 times.
 Scientific Notation is a way of
expressing very large numbers and
very small numbers in a confused
number.
 A number in scientific notation is
written as the product of a number
between 1 and 10 and a power of 10.
 To express a large number in scientific
notation, move the decimal point to the
left to get a number between 1 and 10.
Count the number of places the
decimal point was moved to determine
the exponent of 10.
Example: 3 000 000 = 3x106
 To write a number expressed in
standard form move the decimal point
to the right the same number of places
as the exponent.
Example: 2 x 105 = 200 000

Standard Form Scientific Notation

45 000 000 4.5 x 107
 In adding 2 or more similar
fraction in simple or on
mixed form add the
numerator, copy the
denominator, regroup then
reduce the sum in the
lowest term.

Example:
¼ + ¾ + ¾ = 1 + 3 + 3 = 7/4 or 1 ¾
4
 When subtracting similar
fraction subtract first the
fractions, then the whole
numbers. Rename the
minuend when the fraction
part is smaller than the
fraction part of the
subtrahend.

Example:
¼ - ¾ = 2/4 divided by 2/2 = ½
 To divide a whole number by a
fraction, multiply the whole
number by the reciprocal of the
divisor.

Example:
6 divided by ¾ = 6/1 x 4/3 = 24/3
or 8
 In fractions get the reciprocal of
the divisor and multiply the two
fractions.

Example:
1/2 divided by 5/8 = 1/2 x 5/8 =
5/16
