SKILL MATRIX

A Skills Matrix is a table that displays people’s proficiency in specified skills and
knowledge, as well as their interest in working on assignments using these skills and
knowledge.

To do a competency matrix, we need to have clear roles and responsibilities and Job
descriptions from where the competencies to perform that role effectively, can be
arrived at.

Competencies can be functional(technical), behavioural and managerial. there are


many classifications, though. The competency level exhibited by each role/function
will have variations and that also need to be demarcated.

Advantages
The following are advantages of preparing a skill matrix:

• Improves employee selection


• Reduced overtime and turnover
• Advanced selection procedures
• Increased employee morale
• Identification of training needs of the employees
• Increased productivity
• Help in identifying the strengths, Weakness of the employees and thereby helps in
the formation of the competency mapping.
• Reengineering of jobs can be done easily.
