Reservoir Engineering Lab Report

The document summarizes an experiment to determine the API gravity of water and oil using a hydrometer. The student measured the API of water as 10 and oil as 23, classifying the oil as heavy crude. The document also provides background on API gravity and its importance in classifying and pricing crude oils, with light crudes having the highest market value. It concludes that the objectives of determining the API of water and oil were achieved using the hydrometer and recommends further experiments with different oil types.

Experimental Objectives

1-To determine API for water.

2- To determine API for oil fluid.

Introduction and Theory of Experiment

API gravity of petroleum is important for the conversion of measured volumes. Specific gravity specially
API gravity is a governing factor for the quality of a crude. Crude prices are always posted against API
values.

Experimental Procedures

1. The ambient pressure is measured by a barometer.

2. Fill the jar with fluid.
3. Put the hydrometer in jar.
4. Reading the API of that fluid.

Observations and Experimental Data

The API of water equal 10

The API of oil equal 23

Results and Discussion of Results

In general oils with API gravity of 40 – 45 generate the highest market prices. Any oils with API
gravity of 45 or over have shorter molecular chains which are less desirable to refineries. Below
is an overview of the four major crude oil classifications:
 Light crude oil

Any crude oil with API gravity of over 31.1 degrees falls into the light crude oil category.
 Medium crude oil

Oils with API gravity falling between 22.3 and 31.1 degrees are classed as medium crude oils.
 Heavy crude oil

Heavy crude oils have API gravity of under 22.3.

 Extra heavy oil

Also referred to as bitumen, extra heavy crude oils have API gravity of below 10.0 degrees.

That means the oil for used it heavy crude oil

Conclusions and Recommendations

From this experiment can be conclude that The API of water equal 10

The API of oil equal 23 and we calculate API of oil and water by hydrometer

And I recommend we should use different type of oil (heavy, light…..)
