Report On The English Week Programme In SMK Tanah Merah 1
English Week was an opportunity for students to show everyone their appreciation and
ability at English. In SMK Tanah Merah 1, the English Week was carried out from 18 April
until 22 April 2016. The programme was organized by the English Language Society. With the
slogan “I Love English”, this programme was aimed to encourage all pupils to use English
Language as a medium of interaction with their friends and teachers. Various activities were
arranged during the week and opened to all students. The activities were carried out from 7.30
a.m. until the school sessions ended.
The event kicked off on Monday, 18 April 2016, with the standard assembly in the
Bestari Hall. The principal, Mr. Kamarudin bin Ramli, was invited to give a speech and
subsequently officiated the opening ceremony by cutting a huge red ribbon. Then, a long
English Week banner scrolled down from the top of the hall. After the assembly ended at about
8.30 a.m., the singing competition was held in the Bestari Hall without delay. All students and
teachers were invited to watch the competition. There were six groups of students participated in
the competition. Each group was required to sing an English song. All participants sang their
heart out and their performance was spectacular. At 11.00 a.m., the spelling bee competition
was carried out in the library. Spelling bees can improve students' spelling, increase their
vocabulary and develop correct English usage. Twenty participants from Form 4 and 5 tried
their luck in this challenging competition.
On the second day, the choral speaking competition was held. This competition not only
helped to improve students’ ability to speak fluently but also developed their confidence,
creativity and team cooperation. This competition began at 8.00 a.m. in the Bestari Hall. This
competition was opened to all lower-form students with the theme “The Benefits of English”.
There was lots of excitement in the hall. Everyone oohed and aahed as each group performed
enthusiastically on the stage. Next, the impromptu speech competition was held. Sixteen
students from various forms took part in this thought-provoking competition with the aim to
improve their self-confidence and speaking abilities.
The anxious feeling and excitement continued to the following day. The morning of day
three started with the debate competition, the signature event of English Week. Four teams
comprising the Form 4 and 5 students competed in this event. Everyone was amazed at the
language of the debaters. However, the audience was more spellbound by Mohd Hakim Ramlan,
the most eloquent speaker in the competition. After recess, all students took part in a variety of
mind-boggling competitions. The first and second formers participated in the crossword puzzle
competition in their respective classes. The third formers gathered back in the Bestari Hall to
watch their friends in the tongue twister competition. In the meantime, the upper forms were
involved in the essay competition. Even though each competition was a hard nut to crack, each
participant tried their best.
Day four of the English Week was the most exhilarating day as the treasure hunt activity
was conducted. The event, which lasted the whole day, was carried out around the school
compound. The activity was participated by ten energetic teams. This activity not only gave each
team a rush of adrenaline but also built self-esteem, fostered teamwork and provided the
opportunity to think out of a box the box using their grey matter. Besides, treasure hunt activity
helped to nurture positive attitudes toward the given tasks among team members. Meanwhile, the
poem recitation activity was also held at the Bestari Hall to enable pupils to appreciate literature.
Each participant was allowed to recite the poem of their choice in 5 minutes. Ten students took
part in this competition.
The last day of English Week was more relaxing as students were given a chance to
watch the latest movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. Tickets were sold at RM1.00 per
student. The money raised will go to the English Language Society fund and will be used for
other beneficial programmes in the future. After the morning break, all students and teachers
adjourned to the Bestari Hall to witness the closing ceremony of English Week. The audience
was entertained by a drama performance which was brilliantly executed by the fifth formers.
The day ended with a prize-giving ceremony. The principal, Mr. Ariffin bin Sabtu, handed out
story books and hampers as gifts to the winners.
SMK Alam Shah was immersed in an atmosphere of gaiety during English Week. The
English Language Society would like to congratulate the teachers and the committees in charged
for putting a lot of time and effort to make this event a truly momentous and successful one. We
would also like to express our gratitude to those who have put their heart out into participating
in various activities throughout the week. It is hoped that this programme would encourage
students to love learning English and ultimately build up their confidence level and
communication skills in English.
