Lighting Assignment 1

The document provides a step-by-step solution for designing artificial lighting in a classroom measuring 85 sq. mt. It determines that 4 lighting fixtures, each with 20 watt lamps, are required to provide 178.17 lux of lighting based on utilization factor, room index, and other calculations. The spacing between luminaires is calculated as 3.887 meters with a mounting height of 1.69 meters and space to height ratio of 2.3, which is close to specified limits. Choosing luminaires with a larger space to height ratio could reduce the number of fittings and connected lighting load.

LIGHTING DESIGN FOR THE INTERIORS

Problem : To Design a required Artificial light in a Closed Space.

Solution : The procedure as follows-

TYPE : CLASSROOM

AREA : 85 Sq.mt

Length : 12.02

Width : 7.02

Height : 3.01

Ceiling
Height : 2.45
STEP 1 :

Required lux level – 178.17 lux

Intial Output - 65 lumen/watt

STEP 2 :

Luminarie is given and their total watt rating is given by

Total wattage of luminaries = 4 x 20 Watt

= 80 Watt

STEP 3:

Determining Room index & Utilization Factor

Room Index = L X W / (L + W) Hm
Hm = Vertical distance between working plane and Luminaire

Room Index = 12.02 X 7.02 / ( 12.02 + 7.02 ) 1.69

= 84.3804/32.1776
= 2.62
Utilization Factor : 0.88

STEP 4:

Number of luminaries required

N = E X A / F X Utilisation Factor X L.L.F

Where N = No.of Fittings

E = Lux Level required on working plane
=178.17 Lux
F = Total Flux ( Lumens ) from all lamps in one fitting
= lumen efficiency X Each Fixture watt
= 65 X 80 = 5200 Lumens
U.F = Utilisation Factor from the table form the fitting to be used
= 0.88

L.L.F = Light Loss Factor . This takes account of the depreciation

over time of lamp Output and dirt accumulation on the
fitting and the walls of the building .
= Lamp Lumen M.F X Luminaire M.F X ROOM SURFACE M.F
= 0.8

Therefore
N = 178.17 ( 12.02 X 7.02 ) / 5200 X 0.88 X 0.8
= 15034.055868 / 3660.8
= 4.1067

So , 4 nos Lighting Fixtures are required . Total No.of 20 watt lamps is 4.

Step 5 :

Space the luminaires to achieve desired uniformity.

Spacing between luminares = 3.887

Mounting height = 1.69

Space to height ratio ( S.H.R ) = 2..3

This is close to the limits specified and hence accepted.

It is better to choose luminaires with larger SHR. This can reduce the
number of fittings and
connected lighting load.
