Integrated Lesson Plan 3 Art

The lesson plan aims to teach 1st grade students to identify two-dimensional shapes such as triangles, rectangles, and hexagons as well as elements of art like lines and colors through an activity where they classify and paste cut-out shapes into labeled categories on a construction paper worksheet, comparing their work to the teacher's example, and writing shape characteristics for assessment.

Subject: Math and Art Grade Level: 1st

Unit: Geometry and Foundations Topic: Shapes

Goal(s): TLW recognize shapes and elements of art.
Objective(s): TLW identify two-dimensional shapes and identify lines, shape, and color.
TEKS:
Math
(6) Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process
standards to analyze attributes of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional
solids to develop generalizations about their properties. The student is expected
to:
(D) identify two-dimensional shapes, including circles, triangles,
rectangles, and squares, as special rectangles, rhombuses, and hexagons
and describe their attributes using formal geometric language;
Art
(1) Foundations: observation and perception. The student develops and expands
visual literacy skills using critical thinking, imagination, and the senses to
observe and explore the world by learning, understanding, and applying the
elements of art and principles of design. The student uses what the student sees,
knows, and has experienced as sources for examining, understanding, and
creating artworks. The student is expected to:
(B) identify the elements of art, including line, shape, color, texture, and
form, and the principles of design, including emphasis, repetition/pattern,
and balance, in nature and human-made environments.

Materials/Resources/Technology needs:
 Shape cut-out sheets, pages (1 set per student)
 Crayons
 Scissors
 Construction paper
 Glue sticks
 Poster with shape descriptions (made by teacher)
 The completed project prepared before the lesson by the teacher—but not shown
to the class until mid-way through the lesson

Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event:
 Who can tell me what shape has three sides?
 Draw me a square on the air.
 Lets get in a line and the partner behind you has to draw a shape on your back and
you have to guess what shape it is.

Teaching/ Learning Procedures:

 Students will receive construction paper and have to fold it intro three sections,
they will label each section
o Triangles
o Quadrilaterals
o Other polygons
 They will receive another sheet with images of 18 shapes (no names)
 Students will have to classify the shapes into their appropriate categories
 They will color and trace their shapes on their construction paper
 Students will also paste the shapes, first they will cut them individually
 Mid-way I will show students my project but only half incase they are having
difficulties sorting and once they are done I will show them the final product.

Assessment:
As an exit ticket students will have to write down a characteristic from each category.
