818 Temperature Controller - Adjusting Trim (Offset 4/12/96 Issued by The Applications Engineering Department

This technical document provides instructions for adjusting the trim (offset) on an 818 temperature controller. The trim allows the displayed temperature reading to be accurately calibrated to the actual measured temperature by adding or subtracting a value. The document outlines four steps: 1) enter configuration mode, 2) set the trim value to display in engineering units or microvolts, 3) use the scroll and arrow buttons to adjust the trim value while monitoring temperature, 4) leave configuration mode and ensure no error occurs. Adjusting the trim helps calibrate the controller's temperature display to match actual measured temperature values.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION SHEET – NUMBER 160

818 TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER - ADJUSTING TRIM (OFFSET

4/12/96

ISSUED BY THE APPLICATIONS ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

NOTE: ‘Offset’ is the term usually applied to the value which is added to or
subtracted from the measured value in order for the display to be an accurate reflection
of the measured value. In 818 nomenclature, the term is ‘trim’.

1. Enter configuration mode. (Switch off power to the instrument and remove it from
its sleeve; enable configuration switch - rear switch on microprocessor board; return
instrument to sleeve and switch on power.).

2. In C1 code, set ‘A’ so that trim is displayed in engineering units or microvolts.

Following are possible choices:

Cal Trim in µV Cal Trim in Eng. Units

0 internal CJC 4 internal CJC
1 external 0 °C 5 external 0 °C
2 external 45 °C 6 external 45 °C
3 external 50 °C 7 external 50 °C

3. After the unit has been under power for at least 20 minutes, and while still in C1
configuration code, press the scroll button until ‘tr’ (zero trim) is displayed. Use the
up/down button to set trim to the desired value of zero offset. For example, if
thermocouple calibration shows that its output is 20 degrees above the measured value,
scroll this trim value to -20 degrees.

4. Leave configuration mode. (Push scroll button to ‘Clr’; press up/down arrows at
same time; remove instrument from sleeve and open rear switch on microprocessor
board; replace instrument in sleeve.)

NOTE: If configuration mode is improperly left, an error message, C EN, will be

displayed and it will be necessary to repeat step 4.
