DATCOM-AMR2 – Device description ELGAS, s. r. o.

2 Device description

The device DATCOM-AMR2 (Automatic Meter Reading) belongs to the category of the
mass data collection devices. The existence of these devices is forced by a need of much more
frequent data readings from meters, and is enabled by the stormy coming of communication
technologies.
The device DATCOM-AMR2 (thereinafter referred to as “the device” only) realizes the
two main functions – it arranges the communication with controlling center and performs the
data collection from connected converters and pulse and status inputs.
For the connection with converter it is equipped with a series line. Also low-frequency
signal may be connected to the device (e.g. from gas meter, converter pulse output), or the
status signal can be scanned (door contact, safety flap lock sensor). Furthermore, the device is
equipped with one digital output. By means of the communication line RS485 for converters,
also digital temperature or pressure converters may be connected (EDTxx), or the DATCOM-
RTU system modules.
To communicate with control center, the device is equipped with the built-in GSM
modem. In mobile operator networks it can work in the CSD mode (dialed connection) as
well as in the GPRS. Depending on the engagement place, antennas of various sizes may be
used. SIM holder can be accessed after opening the device case.
The device works based on battery power supply. In order to keep energy consumption to
a minimum the communication is turned on at a set time and lasts for as short time as
necessary. Due to using of state-of-the-art parts, such energy consumption was achieved that
the device is capable in working in a defined mode without battery replacement for 5 years.
The device is approved to be used in surroundings with a danger of explosion classified
as ZONE1 and ZONE2. It may thus be situated next to converter. The battery power supply,
wireless communication and the possibility of being situated near converter allow a
significant reduction of costs associated with the device installation and operation.

Main features:
From a viewpoint of explosion safety providing, the device is designed and approved in
the FTZÚ Ostrava-Radvanice as a spark-safe device according to the standards EN 60079-0
and EN 60079-11. Batteries can be changed by user also in a surrounding with a danger of
explosion. Battery status is monitored by the device; the user is informed in advance that
replacement is needed. To prevent data loss at the time of battery replacement or in case the
power supply battery is discharged, backup battery is placed in the device.
The device is positioned in a plastic box with a high protection level and may be operated
in a wide range of ambient temperatures. This allows the device placement in outdoor
surrounding as well.
Serial interface used to connect the converter is realized using an exchange module. It
enables user a simple interface change, with respect to the inverter positioned in the
measuring place. Using already realized modules, not only converters made by the company
ELGAS, s.r.o. can be connected (ELCOR-94, ELCOR-2, uELCOR, and microELCOR-2), but
also converters from other manufacturers. The RS-485 interface may also serve to connect
extension modules (DATCOM-RTU, EDTxx converters).
In serial interface network designing we have used detail knowledge of converters
produced by our company. Due to that we managed the device connection to ELCOR-94,
using a different type of protection „n“ according to ČSN EN 50 021. To connect converters
of other manufacturers, existing serial interface exchange modules can be used, or a new
module can be developed according to customer specifications.

-4-
DATCOM-AMR2 – Device description ELGAS, s. r. o.

The device is equipped with 6 inputs that may be configured as binary (all of them) or
low-frequency pulse ones (4 at maximum). Binary inputs may serve to scan door contacts,
safety flap lock positions, etc. Pulse inputs serve to connect gas meter pulse outputs or
converters.
Furthermore, the device is equipped with 1 output which may be configured as a pulse or
binary one.
This is an unmanned device; the operator is informed about the operation status by LED
diodes situated on the front panel. As for servicing or local communication with the device or
converter, infra-red interface for using the HIE-01 head is available. Parameter setting can be
carried out locally or in a remote way, using the SW Telves.
The device firmware upgrade may be done via service interface, or in a remote way,
using GSM network.
To prevent an unauthorized device insinuation, screws are placed on the case cover, with
a possibility of sealing.

2.1 Operational modes

2.1.1 Archiving in the device

The data from converters and binary or pulse inputs are periodically loaded and saved in
the device archives. Also monitored are the device operational states. The device is equipped
with automatic diagnostics and error signaling. During this operational mode, an appropriate
converter communication protocol must be implemented in the device. Converter data
archived in the device are, with a requested period, handed over to the superior system. The
superior system is represented by the off-line data transfer from converters.

2.1.2 Communication transparent mode

The superior system communicates directly with the converter connected to the
transceiver using utility SW for a given converter, and may load instant values or archives or,
possibly, use an appropriate service program for the converter diagnostics or parameter
setting. From a viewpoint of the superior system this is an on-line data transfer from
converters.

2.1.3 Combined mode

This is used in case that, except the converter, also other peripheral units are connected to
the device, such as pulse and binary inputs, pressure and temperature transducers, etc., so the
device is, in addition to its main function, working also as a data-logger.

2.2 Application example

Fig. 1 Application example

The example of DATCOM-AMR2 device assembly and ELCOR-2 converter is depicted

in Fig. 1.
The converter performs measurements of gas consumption and provides watching of the
safety flap locks position; DATCOM-AMR2 senses door opening and provides – at regular
intervals – the connection with control center by means of GSM network. Both devices are
situated near the gas meter (ZONE1 or ZONE2), and are supplied from batteries.

-6-
DATCOM-AMR2 – Installation ELGAS, s. r. o.

3 Installation, putting into operation, maintenance

The device is delivered with a disconnected block of supplying batteries. Due to its
mechanical performance, the device disposes of the IP65 protection. After all of the device
operations have been finished, it becomes necessary to close the case and check proper
tightening of screws in the cover and cable bushings.

3.1 Connection of the device to converter

The device can be connected to converters, the serial interface of which is performed as
intrinsically safe (according to ČSN EN 50 020). The connection must be carried out in
compliance with this standard, and the parameters of explosion safety of both of the devices
must be respected.
The device can also be connected to the ELCOR-94 converter which has, in order to
provide serial interface circuits explosion safety, the protection of „n“ type according to ČSN
EN 50 021. The connection with the above mentioned converters can be performed without
affecting the entire system explosion safety. The only thing to be done is excluding or
ensuring the ELCOR-94 converter digital outputs connection against explosion; to do so, e.g.
DATCOM-K3 may be used.
Note 1 All of the device inputs and outputs are intrinsically safe, i.e. they may only be
connected to intrinsically safe circuits. However, if at least one input or output was connected
without a needed separation from an intrinsically unsafe circuit (except the ELCOR-94), this
would lead to breaking the device spark safety, so the device could not be installed in an
environment with a danger of explosion.

3.2 Device assembling

Prior to the device assembling, it is necessary to screw fixing adaptors supplied as
accessories onto the case rear wall. Using them, it is possible to fix the device onto wall or
mounting plate. Assembling holes spacing is 245 x 105 mm, the screw size is 4mm and it is
countersunk.

3.3 Cabling
To connect the device to converters and other equipments (gas meter…), it is suitable to
use a recommended cable, see Tab. 1 . Shielding on the DATCOM-AMR2 side must be
insulated and connected to the device mechanical ground at the cable opposite end (in case
when a converter using bushing is used). It is preferable to terminate conductors with pressing
connectors, to be connected to terminals more easily.
If the device is mounted in explosion hazardous zone, it is necessary to realize that all
cables including antenna cable serve to conduct spark-safe signals and perform cabling
installation, in agreement with pertinent standards.

3.4 Putting into operation

After the assembly and installation have been finished, it becomes necessary to perform
the check of connections, insert SIM card and turn on the device by connecting the power
supply battery. After having been switched on, the device restarts and is waiting for
instructions by means of the service interface or GSM network according to parameters set in
the device.
During putting into operation, it is necessary to:
• Check or set parameters
• Perform testing alarm to dispatching
• Perform testing call from dispatching to the device
• Check the device communication with converter

The device status can be checked using indication LED diodes on the front panel, see
Fig. 3 DATCOM-AMR2. Before the device positioning onto the place of installation, the
device parameters can be prepared without further setting by the service interface.

3.5 Changing of interface module for converter connection

Prior to the module replacement, it is necessary to switch off the device by disconnecting
the power supply battery. Then the interface module (possibly using a suitable tool) can be
taken out. The operation must be performed carefully in order to prevent connector damaging.
Then a new module can be slipped over and cabling connection change may be done. The
description of terminals for converter connection is placed on the interface module. After the
replacement has been finished, the device may be switched on again.

3.6 Maintenance
The device does not require any maintenance. Routine checking is suitable to be
performed according to usual rules. Repeated revision performing adheres to appropriate
standards.
Battery replacement may be carried out also in a surrounding with a danger of explosion.
It is permitted to use only the block LP-04 supplied by the manufacturer. The battery cannot
be taken into parts in surroundings with a danger of explosion. Only 2 screws are intended for
the battery assembling and dismantling; the screws are not sealed with labels (see Fig. 2).
After the original battery has been disconnected and before a new battery is put in, it is
necessary to wait for at least 15 seconds in order to enable automatic loading of the new
battery capacity.
On the device case cleaning, it is necessary to prevent electrostatic charge creation if the
device is situated in a hazardous zone (wipe with wet cloth, etc.).

The service 4-pole switch is situated in the device for service purposes only. During
regular operation all poles must be left in „OFF“ position.

4.3 SIM card

Prior to the SIM card replacement, the device must be first switched off by the power
supply battery disconnecting. Before SIM card taking out, the holder must be first
mechanically released by its upper element movement to the right, and then the entire upper
element should be lifted off to the right side. The proper orientation of the inserted SIM card
is ensured by the cut corner, presented on both the card and holder. After the card has been
replaced, the holder must be closed again and insured by the holder upper element movement
to left. In case a SIM card with PIN code protection is used, it is necessary to enter the PIN
code into the device parameters by means of the service interface communication. The device
proper function, after the SIM card has been replaced, can be ascertained using the LED diode
indication „Modem“, see Tab. 2 LED indication diodes.
