Read Theory

ReadTheory.org is website that provides interactive and differentiated reading practice for students. Research indicates
that through regular and systematic reading practice, students are able to improve their reading skills. Improved reading
skills are applicable to all disciplines that a student encounters and are necessary for success in high school and post-
secondary education, and to facilitate life-long learning.

In North Carolina students in English IV are expected to demonstrate competency in the Common Core State Standards
for Grade 12. Those standards include the following for reading informational text:

 By the end of grade 12, read and comprehend literary nonfiction at the high end of the grade 11 CCR-text
complexity band independently and proficiently.

 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as
inferences drawn from the text

 Determine two or more central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text.
Provide an objective summary of the text.

 Analyze a complex set of ideas or sequence of events and explain how specific individuals, ideas, or events
interact and develop over the course of the text.

 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text.

In order to be successful in achieving the CCSS for Grade 12, students will use, among other strategies, Read Theory.
Students will be given class time once a week to work independently with Read Theory. Additionally, students may
access Read Theory on any Internet connected device (including computers, tablets and cell phones) to work outside of
class to improve scores.
