Rizal's 1888-1890 Global Travels

Rizal took his second travel beginning in February 1888, departing from Manila. He traveled to Hong Kong, Macao, Japan, the United States, England, Paris, Spain, and other parts of Europe. While traveling, he experienced different cultures, did research, and met other Filipinos living abroad like Marcelo Del Pilar and Mariano Ponce who were pioneers of the propaganda movement. Rizal also spent time in libraries gathering materials for his work and exploring.

 Departed From Manila (Feb. 3, 1888)

 Hongkong and Macao (Feb. 8-22, 1888)

- Jose Sainz de Varanda was sent to spy on him through the instructions of Gov. General

 Japan (Feb. 28- April 13, 1888)

- Arrived and lived in Yokohama then moved to Tokyo

- Cost of living was high; forturnately………..

- Secretary of the Spanish Legation allowed him to live in the Spanish Legation which

allowed him to save on his travel expenses

- Arrive in San Francisco from Japan through the steamer, Belgic

- Departed from New York to reach England (before reaching Rome)

 Liverpool, England (May 24, 1888)

- Due to his intellect, the Library of Foreign Affairs recommended him to the British

Museum

- Stopover before Paris

- Spent time in Paris for a Week

- Went to Bibliotheque Nationale to gather historical materials

- Met Juan Luna with his wife
